It is. At best it's a lack of cultural understanding by a load of ignorant Brits who don't understand anything that goes on outside of their own provincial town.

Oh, you know her personally, and you know how she behaves on a daily basis when she's not on tv? Fair play to you in that case, and here I was assuming that you were talking a load of xenophobic nonsense....

Rubbish !

My dad came from the North east of England and then spent 40 odd years living down south in Kent.

To hear him you'd think he was born in Kent.

Then when we went up north on Summer holidays he would try putting on his old accent again.

It made everyone cringe and was totally out of place. Even the Northerners looked at him as if he was taking the piss.

It's the incompetent producers encouraging her, another bad decision by them.

You are right to question that, as she doesn't appear to be like that on a daily basis. Watch her on the repeat of the Graham Norton show on Monday.

Well said, researchshirley.

PollyAnnaGirl is spot on. This thread does feel so wrong.

At best, it's ignorance, at worst it's blatant racism.

She appeared on Graham Norton last year to sing Commander also. She was a completely different person to the one on XF. Almost humble.

Oh the irony. And if you are American you will need to look up irony too as you lot don't seem to get that!

We Brits understand perfectly about other cultures, we just can't understand what some vacuous, and may I had fairly talentless, American 'chick' is doing on our television screens talking like she is in the ghetto ... she isn't she's on national British TV and needs to try and get both of her braincells to work together and realise that!!

This example has nothing at all to do with the subject at hand. And supports my theory of lack of cultural understanding in these parts.

I'm British, white and well aware of how many Brits don't actually understand certain other cultures. Your post being a prime example of this sort of unpleasantness and lack of self-awareness displayed on this thread.

Lack of self awareness.... go on then how do you figure that out? This should be good!

As for Rowland I wouldn't mind if she talked like that all the time, if it was her real persopnality, but it isn't... it's some stupid thing she does for effect and it's nauseating.

BTW I am white and Britsih, but I live half my life in places like Indonesia, Tibet, India, Thailand... I think I have a grip on other cultures but thanls for the amateur psycho babble!

If you had any self-awareness you'd realise that talking about Kelly "going all ghetto" is offensive and racist. This is a woman brought up in a very different culture to yours and for her to slip in and out of her indigenous vernacular is something that is culturally ingrained and entirely natural. Frankly, evenif it weren't, I don't see why you find it so difficult to deal with.

Slip in and out of her indigenous vernacular.... LOL!

She was brought up in Houston for goodness sake... there are no ghettos in Houston!!!!

Oh and I find it difficult to deal with as it is annoying just like an Essex accent is annoying.... is that racist too?

americans understand irony, but they are less subtle than brits, they refused to have a stuck up geordie brit- (cough Cheryl!!) on their version of the show, as they already worked her out to be a talentless bint

Ergo we can get rid of Rowland for the same reason!!!

Wasn't it more down to the fact they couldn't understand her... this is the nation that needed subtitles on Trainspotting after all.

one problem you haven't lived in a black country, therefore not qualified to talk about awareness of living in an african country

There are ghettos in every city in the USA. And she was brought up in Georgia, not Houston. She moved there when she was 8 (I'm assuming she learned English during her years in Georgia).

Can you please stop playing the racism card. It is people like you who are the problem in supposedly free societies today. Pleadse have a bit of respect for your own culture, and allow others to express their opinions.

Some of the comments on here are a little extreme, However I find this response to be a little pretentious and the reactions are just as bad

"Indigenous vernaculaR" is just a pc way of saying accent

If I see something offensive I'm going to comment on it. That's expressing my opinion.
