Let him try it with a brand new Cube out of the box, they are as stiff as hell.

Let him try it with one that someone else has mixed up.
That could easily have been a pre-practiced sequence.

Back in the 80s I was a sub-1 minute cuber, and could easily have set one up to do that.

Not at all, just realistic.
Being an old cuber myself, I know how easy it is to learn sequences and set-up something like that.
I couldn't solve it myself in under 10 seconds, but I could set it up to look like I did.

Not saying he definitely did set it up - but when you mix the cube yourself, it's possible to do so - and from a video, we can't know for sure whether or not it was a genuine 'solve'.
