How Do You Solve A Problem Like The Panel?

I've come to the conclusion that the problems with TXF this year largely lie within the judging panel. Putting aside the obvious assumptions that much of the show is scripted and the panel are mere Christmas baule-baules, I think that after the initial love affair with a fresh new panel and all the fun they appeared to have at the auditions, it just doesn't work having three music artists on the panel, specifically Gary and Kelly.

Experienced and worldly as they may be regarding matters surrounding the music business, they give off an element of smugness that I find slightly nauseating. Although no combination of judges has ever been perfect, I think one of the things that worked best with Simon, Dannii, Cheryl and Louis was that you had an even balance of behind-the-scenes talent and then those who's product was actually being sold to the public. Cheryl's solo career was massively boosted off the success of X Factor, and it was obvious that she was nervous about it. Dannii had come to the panel as a somewhat minor star in the UK, often accused of riding the coattails of Kylie's success, but has since turned her hand to many new ventures and carved out a career of her own. I'm not an avid fan of either, I'm just pointing out that a judging gig on the X Factor panel could just as easily have all out flopped for Dannii and Cheryl, and I think they both knew it. The contestants probably found it a lot easier to identify with someone who's aspirations were as much at stake as their own, even if they were not in either woman's category. I imagine there was a much larger sense of camaraderie once upon a time.

As for Gary and Kelly, well yes they're both hugely successful and can probably command the respect of almost anyone based on their achievements. But they both said they wanted to 'mentor an act to stardom', not remind a bunch of clamouring amateurs why they're NOT stars. It's all very counter-productive.

Take the mentoring away from the judges. Have 4 other real artists as mentors.

Lets see the judges real thoughts.

Well that's basically what The Voice is but they are coaches as well.

I completely agree. I also think Gary being made 'head judge' was a stupid mistake of Cowell to make. I'm not saying i think Louis should have been made it, but this has caused an obvious rift in the panel, they should have all been given a level footing. Why is a head judge needed anyway?
I think serious changes to the panel are needed if its going to come back next year. I was never a fan of Simons, but he is definitely missed.

To add on to my post, I think with artists outnumbering the execs three to one, the panel has become incredibly unrealistic and in no way an accurate represenation of what the actual industry is like. An act looking to break into the charts would not be attempting to impress already established acts in order to do so. Obviously if you are performing in front of a panel of judges regardless of their origins the aim is to impress them, and that they are impressed.

But therein lies the problem. I really don't think Gary or Kelly are ever particularly impressed. What's worse is that they come across as thinking that they don't NEED to be impressed. Neither of them have exhibited any real interest or enthusiasm in mentoring their acts, their tactical critiques of their competitors and fellow judges are evidence enough of that.

The most I can garner from either of their attitudes is complete and utter self absorbance; they're on the panel to increase their own profile, and their acts represent THEM, not the other way around. Gary's blame game regarding Frankie and Kelly's notable absence during the Misha 'bullygate' saga put them in a pretty dismal picture.

Get rid of Gary and Kelly. Id give Tulisa another shot, she hasn't been as infuriating as the other 2, Louis has to stay.

Agreed. Tulisa actually exhibits some genuine feeling with regard to her acts. Despite being there to boost her own profile as much as Gary and Kelly, she's at least attempted to throw her heart and soul into what she's doing.

Poor Louis...part of the furniture and all that lol.
