Controversial music videos
Eric Prydz - Call On Me - sexualised video??? Politicians, family groups and educators do not agree with this.
Michael Gray - The Weekend - slightly obscene content. (but it's a superb dance single, BTW!) Can anyone think of any other??/ |

Other controversial vids: Duran Duran - Girls on Film (nudity / sex) Beloius Some - Imagination (nudity) Massive Attack - can't remember the song (nudity - a stripper at the Raymond Revue Bar) Madonna - Justify My Love (nudity / sex) Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name (swearing - features the line "f**k you I won't do what you tell me" 16 times at the end of the song) Sid Vicious - My Way (violence - shoots the "audience" with a pistol) Loads of hip-hop and rock acts using female nudity (yawn) |

I don't know if they ever did a video for it, but 'So What' by the Anti-Nowhere League was the first song ever to be banned under the obscene publications act. (I'll let you Google for the lyrics yourself....not for the fainthearted)
Recently covered by Metallica... |

Barbie Girl?!!!!...... whatever you're on, can I have some too?!!!
![]() Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" must be #1 controversial video, v. creepy yet utterly amazing! What really bugs me is the huuuuge amount of.... 1- Unecessary nudity / overt sexual overtones in videos by songs / artists that are clearly aimed at schoolage audience. 2- Glorification of violence, misogeny (spelling?), and 'bling bling' naffness, again when aimed at a younger audience. It's not just a moral stance here, I'm simply very very BORED by most music videos these days! What's wrong with being creative????? |

Barbie Girl was controversial because loads of people complained that a song 'about' a popular child's toy had a lot of sexual double meanings :P ("You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere", etc)..

Unkle - Rabbit in your headlights
One of my favourite videos! Features a man being repeatedly run over, with a twist at the end. |

Agree with the Aphex Twin vid ( used to work with his cousin BTW) but whatr's controversial in todays world? Duran Duran were with most of their vids but were only really titallation (sp?). If you watch the xxx music channel any night there are far more controverisial vids, albeit pixellated. The trend today seems to be more towards misogny, especially by black gangsta bands.

Interesting you should say this - there was an article in the Daily Mail ( Personally I don't have a problem as such with it, but I can understand where they are coming from (no pun intended!!). Why they chose to have some "scantily clad participants groping themselves and rubbing towels suggestively across their bodies" I don't know, but at a guess it is because of the fact that sex sells. |

Oooh, Purity, you beat me to it! Definitely Marilyn Manson's (s)AINT!
![]() The Prodigy's 'Smack My Bitch Up (as someone else has already said) - I only find that hard to watch though because of the puking! I have a vomit phobia-type-thing. Strangely, though, Marilyn puking in the above vid doesn't bother me. I saw a particular Cradle of Filth vid very late one night - I think it was on MTV2 (when they were still OK-ish), but I can't remember which track it was. It had these awful white wormy-maggoty things and some nuns slashing their wrists. Great vid though. I would also probably include Marilyn Manson's 'Disposable Teens' (the uncut version) on the grounds that Christians would find his outfit somewhat offensive/disturbing. P.S. Purity - go look on Amazon.com - the Americans are all mad because their version didn't include (s)AINT (and also Personal Jesus as well I think). |

Wow, not often we get something that the Americans don't! A lot of US fans seem really annoyed about this, I wonder why they suddenly decided to take off two videos? I can understand (S)aint, but what on earth is wrong with Personal Jesus????
Smoo - if you're watching the (S)aint video again anytime soon, watch the blonde girl in the wedding dress, I'm pretty damn sure that at one point it's actually MW Gacy, but I could do with someone else to confirm it and prove I'm not mad!!

Eminem - Stan - where a guy turns to suicide and drives a car over a bridge with his pregnant girlfriend in the boot.
The massive attack video someone else said is called "Be Thankful (For what you've got)" |

Hi again, Purity
I was thinking that they maybe banned the Personal Jesus vid in the States due to religious reasons? They are the Bible Belt of the world, after all. I can't think of anything else. I thought the girl (when it was no longer a girl, lol) was Tim Skold? I'm pretty sure it is. Bought a copy of Kerrang! today - there's a Manson interview (not long enough though) and he explains a little about (s)AINT. Have you read it? It's supposed to reflect how bleak things have been for him this year and how he was contemplating suicide and stuff. Too much absinthe, perchance?!

Hi Smoo!! May well have been Skold - sometimes hard to tell the difference between the two, especially with a 5 second clip when wearing a wedding dress!! (glad to know I'm not going mad either!!)
I read the Kerrang interview, very glad to know he's decided not to give up on the music side of things just yet! Fingers crossed that they'll get a new guitarist and start working on a new album - have you heard John5's solo album yet, not heard good things about it but haven't actually listened to it myself? Never could get the taste for absinthe meself!!

Hey Purity
I've read the [only] customer review of John 5's solo album (on Amazon UK), and they gave it 5/5. It doesn't sound like my cup of tea though. Steve Vai? Hmm. Cheesy? I'm not one for instrumentals much. What about you? I might pop on over to HMV in a bit and see if you can have a listen on their site. I'm glad we seem to have established that you're not mad, anyway! I was very relieved too, to hear that Manson isn't quite ready to throw in the towel just yet. I honestly couldn't deal with that! (I'm allowed to say that 'cos I'm a girl). I honestly think that one of Manson's biggest problems is that he's experienced pretty much everything, and in effect, there's kind of nothing left to look forward to or get excited about. What do you think? I can't believe he's getting married. Not that I'm one to get jealous, of course. Wonder if they'll have kids? That would be interesting. They'd probably be really well-adjusted individuals as it goes. |

George Michael's "Outside" and "Shoot the Dog" caused quite a stir...
..and I always remember Queen's "I Want To Break Free" was banned from MTV beacause they dressed up as female characters from Corination Street at the start of the video(!). Ah, the good old 80s. |

An Ash song had a banned video. It featured a prostitute slashing Tim Wheeler with a knife.
Talking about Eric Pryds, what about Benni Benassi 'Satisfaction' which was number one last year sometime. That featured nearly naked women using power tools in a sexual fashion! MTV used to do a programme in the 90's called Alternative Nation and that used to feature banned songs. I can't remember anymore though. |

Eric Pryds video may or may not be exploitative, but it is at least contextually perfect, as it's a fantastic track to workout to. The controversial videos that really annoy me are where the vid is controversial but has seemingly nothing to do with the song, and it's obvious it was made only for shock value in the hope that some station bans it. Also a means of boosting CD sales by putting the "full length un-cut video" on it.
I remember seeing Smack My Bitch Up and Windowlicker and thinking extreme vid, but it has nothing to with the song. The songs aren't that great in themselves, so without their respective video's, would either of those tracks be remembered much now? I suggest not |
