Puppy not eating

I have a seven month old Yorkie/Springer Spaniel. We feed her three times a day on Wagg Chicken & Veg. In the morning she has it with nothing else, a scrambled egg at lunch and some chicken at dinner. Recently she's only eaten the egg and the chicken but has left the biscuits alone and doesn't eat them. In the morning she'll have a couple but will ignore the rest. Is there anything wrong with her or anything we can do to get her to eat properly?

well check you are not feeding her too much as you have not stated the amounts and given the choice between crappy biscuits scrambled egg or chicken what would you eat if you were not overly hungry.

Its very easy to make a fussy dog if you supplement his main diet especially if he is maybe being overfed

your puppy is eating it is just being fussy if it was not eating it would be an entirely different thing

Sounds like shes just taking the best bits. Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with her. Leave out the egg and just give her the chicken and dog biscuits see if that makes a difference. Try giving her two meals a day not 3

She sounds like a little dog so she is probably not that hungry. The obvious answer is to feed her less. If she is still not eating, then there is a problem. Miss out a meal and see how hungry she is.

I've had dogs for 15 years. You are starting off making a rod for your own back with feeding. Don't give human food.

Wagg is not a good food either. Buy a decent quality dog food like JWB and stick to the same brand. Dish up the amount it says on the bag.

At the moment she's taking the good stuff likeyour food and leaving the rest. That's your fault. If you gave a kid chocolates and sweets and a normal dinner which would they choose?

When I eat my dinner my dogs sit there watching me hoping for some. As soon as I finish they run to their bowl and eat their own food.

Leave out the egg and chicken. Get a decnt quality dog food and stick to that.

Cut out the egg. They're often recommended by vets as a short term fix to prevent toilet problems in young dogs, but they aren't supposed to eat them long term. I think it's probably filling her up.

This does bring back memories though. I used to sit on the floor and pick up my dog's bowl, turn my back on him then make slurping noises as if I were eating from it. Funnily enough he'd always start eating when I put it back down again

We were told by the vet and previous owners that egg and chicken on a daily basis is fine. We're considering weening her off the egg and a lunchtime meal shortly, as to remove it completely straight away would confuse her wouldn't it?

She's a dog. She'll get over it within minutes

It won't confuse her, it will make her less full of people food and more inclined to eat her dog biscuits. Eggs have a lot of fat and calories in them, eating them every day isn't a good idea. Honestly shed be healthier without the eggs

you can feed it to your dog on a daily basis, but if you want her to eat her other food that will need to change if your dog was eating everything there wouldnt be a problem, dogs need a balanced diet like people so she needs to eat her complete food rather than ust chicken and eggs give the occasional treat instead.

if you dont like the advice why start the thread if you want to listen to the previous owner and the vet thats up to you, dogs dont think the same as people she will eat her food when she is hungry as long as you arent feeding her tastier options

You have a yorkie x springer?! I hope the dam was the springer Egg and chicken is fine on a daily basis, although raw egg is better. However you are feeding it with a complete food, ie it needs nothing added to it. This coupled with 3 meals a day at 7months is too much. Try cutting out the lunchtime feed and don't get uptight about not eating, she won't starve

Our puppy is 16 weeks and we have just taken him down to 2 meals a day. My guess is that you are feeding too often and perhaps too much each time?

I think the advice on this thread shows that all dogs are different, my yorkie drank very little and we used to get really worried about it, because she is so small it seemed like a major drama! Again advice varies on how many meals a day, when we had spaniels we put the food down in the morning and they would graze on it on and off, now our yorkie who weighs under 5lb would keel over on one meal a day! She has 3 small meals a day chicken or ceaser & some arden grange dog biscuits so little and often works for her, I would say to weigh your dog every other day and then you can see if her diet or lack of it is affecting her.

I wondered that about a Yorkie/Springer cross....was there a small step ladder involved at all?

I agree about a raw egg now and then being fine. I think it's just the portions that need to change.

I have large breed dogs and my (and the expert Breeders' ) feeding advice is 4 meals up to 12 weeks, then 3 meals to six months, 2 after that, until 12 months and then 1 if it suits the dog and you.
My full grown Briards eat a few dog biscuits for breakfast and one main meal a day around 4pm.

My 9 week old puppy is eating well but has started to not want 4 meals a day, she leaves most of her lunch which I take up and return to her at tea time she eats it then.
I will give her smaller 4 meals until she is 12 weeks and then drop the midday one.

IMHO at 7 months, your dog should not be on 3 meals a day, swap one meal for a large Bonio or equivalent to start with.
Do not feed tit bits, if you give them human food regularly then you may find you have to stick to it!
