I am considering buying a used kindle, as the person selling it says it comes with 100 books already on it, will this be correct though, as i thought the books had to be brought through the persons account that the kindle is registered to, so if i brought it and de-registered it, then registered it to my account would the books still be there?

If the books were purchased through the Amazon Kindle store and haven't had their DRM removed then you probably wont be able to read them once you register the Kindle to your account.

You could always rip the DRM off yourself (though you don't have a license to read these books). Just plug the Kindle into your computer and copy the books across, then get the 16-digit serial number of the Kindle (it's in Menu/Settings). Then download some DRM-removal software and rip away.

This is what i do with all the books i buy from the Kindle store, just in case i ever want to read them on some other device.

If the Kindle's registered to another person's Amazon account, wouldn't it need to be de-registered by the original owner before the OP could re-register it to their own account? Or can you get Amazon to do that bit? If they can, do you think they would want to see proof of purchase?

It's in the original owner's best interest to deregister the device they are selling off themselves . It can be done both from the device and the Amazon account. The new owner could just continue using it and purchase the books using the original owner's credit card registered at Amazon.

As for the books on it, when the device is deregistered, all DRMed books will be deleted. The personal documents should stay.

That's what I thought. Hope it helps the OP too!

Thanks for your input, its as i thought, and to be honest so did the person who was selling it, as they made such a song and dance about it having the 100 books, as soon as i questioned them about the validity of the 100 books she removed the item from the website, so i think she was trying to con some poor unsuspecting person

Think you may be wrong here. The books may not have been purchased from Amazon and may be DRM free.

Also if a Kindle is deregistered and re-registered to a new user the books already on it are not removed but cannot be reloaded from archive if deleted.
