Men, Why do you dislike shopping?
sharelle

Hey guys,

I'm an advertiser and currently working on a campaign to influence men to shop online.

First I would like to know reasons why men dislike shopping in stores/shopping centres etc.

All of your comments will be extremely helpful and appreciated.
Thank you!

Ok Sharelle,

Last time I looked, I was a man. I don't dislike shopping, but I shop for what I need, I will never ever spend hours perusing sites looking for x number of different shoes, jeans tshirts etc. My mind is pretty much made up once I see what I need, I don't need acres of choice. Once I have what I need, I tend to be distracted by certain types of shops, mainly selling tech or books, or by girls

I strongly suspect that is how most men are. Those motivated by sports like football or rugby would prefer to spend their weekends doing or watching exactly that, and accessories are just pointless in manworld.

Hope that's enough to get you started.

I'm female so I don't know if you're interested in my responses but I shopping for the following reasons.

Busy shops and queues.

Folk who block streets and aisles to have a blether. Move into the side FFS!

Having to wrap up when going out in winter, then walking into a shop and instantly breaking out in a sweat.

Sizing. I can be anything from a 10 to a 16 depending on what shop I got to. (I reckon I'm a 12 in reality) This leads me to...

...having to try everything on. 3 items per person. Strip off a million layers of winter clothing, try item on, discover it doesn't fit. Wrestle on layers again, locate item in different size, return to changing room and start again. Even more irritating when you realise the size 12 hanger you lifted has a size 8 item on it.

Racks of clothing above head height. I'm 5'6 so I'm not particularly short but I can't reach to look through the hangers for my size.

Over enthusiastic sales assistants who hide behind racks waiting to pounce as soon as you walk in the door. Yes, I know they're following company policy and it's not their fault. In turn this leads me to...

...crabbit sales assistants who give the impression you've disturbed their gossip session by approaching with a question.

Everything about shopping irritates me. Online shopping is the best invention. Ever.

Other shoppers. I'm great in an empty shop (had a whole floor of John Lewis to myself a few weeks ago and it was heaven) but populate the shop with a load of other people and it transforms into the seventh circle of hell.

Men's attitude has completely changed to shopping and fashion. Since the arrival of JLS, Olly Murs, lots of men take their appearance as serious as ladies. Topman, River Island, Peacocks, H&M make huge profits on menswear!

Personally, I enjoy shopping, especially at this time of the year. I just don't like clothes shopping with girls. They tend to take forever!

I think the question is how can anyone actually enjoy being pushed and shoved, barged around. Hard work and so very tiring. I know plenty of females who hate it, as I do, just get in and get out.
Can't believe people do it for fun, I'm trying to work out where to go for the next few weeks to avoid all the Xmas kack.

I'm a man and I don't hate shopping.

I love the feeling of finding myself something I really want and then purchasing it!

What I do hate are the way some shops seem to not be set up for having more than one customer visiting them at a time. If you have 6 cash desks then have 6 staff manning them.. if you expect 100s of customers at any one time then have enough staff to deal with them, have enough changing rooms to cope with the amount of people you expect to want to try things on. Make sensible decisions about stock - don't overstock on teeny-tiny items, or massive huge items when most people are somewhere inbetween the two!

You can't help how other shoppers act but you can prepare things better so that shopping doesn't become the most hateful experience on earth!

What a generalisation! You can't say that all men dislike shopping as it simply isn't true. Studies show that men may well shop differently but not all men dislike to shop.

Ideally, your study should be based on marketing figures of the shopping habits of men via sexuality, occupation and social class.

Investigating past studies may well show that men spend more on impulse buys. ((NPower))

That men may well pay more and not look for bargains.

Men spend less than women.

Price loyalty. If prices go up men are more likely not to buy the product any more.

Men prefer the comfort of good brands. Brands have captured this by promoting the masculinity of their products. This will make you more manly.

Target men with no family commitments. They may have more money to spend than those who are married and have children.

Gay men. Do they cross into both male and female shopping spheres? Studies show that gay men tend to be more shop wise than heterosexuals. Gay men look for the best price. They have more time to look for bargains. They walk into more shops. Gay men spend more on home improvements.

How do men react to governmentality and reward cards? Studies show women like them more to men and men are least likely to cash in their rewards. Does buying petrol influence men and reward cards more? Studies show that masculine pursuits such as cars, technology, drinking alcohol and sport encourage higher spending.

Speed and convenience. Studies show men spend more when shopping is made easier. Men tend to hate queues and may well walk out if the queue is too long or the shop is too busy. The tiny size of the shop and the height or size of the man may also influence shopping and studies show it. Men like to walk in and get what they want.

Thus, the benefits of the internet can be very lucrative if internet stores can capsulate the above and encourage comfort, speed, ease of website and ease of search tools. Get it in 1-2 months puts people off but you see it on Amazon a lot lately!

I don't like queues in shops.

It's usually cheaper to buy online. However, certain things I wouldn't buy online.

Most advertising on the TV is geared towards women nowadays and often denigrates/makes fun of men, so it's hardly an incentive for men to shop at places like Boots for example.

Depends which men you're talking about, most gay men love it.

Quite a few women hate shopping in Malls as well.

I'm a straight male and hate clothes shopping. The only kind of shopping that I enjoy is related to my hobbies such as shopping for radio controlled car stuff, model trains, model race cars, computers, video games, etc.

I can't stand shopping and looking at clothing. Its very boring and dry. I have zero interest in trying to be fashionable myself. I buy clothes to be comfortable and not look like a retard. When I need clothes or shoes, I try to zoom into the store, find what I need ASAP and then pay and leave as quickly as possible.

The key point is that looking fashionable has zero interest to me unlike checking out a new video game which does have a strong interest to me. I don't associate fun with shopping for clothes. Its a chore like doing the dishes or mopping the floor.
