Ipod Touch is 8GB enough?
Hello all
![]() My daughter, aged 9, has asked for an IPod Touch for Christmas. I have no idea really what I'm doing when it comes to these sorts of gadgets and I wonder whether the 8GB one would be plenty of storage or whether to allow her to "grow" with it, so to speak, would I be better off trying to find the extra money for the 32GB one? She doesn't have huge amounts of music and I have no idea how much space things like games take ... she would probably want photos and videos on it - mainly of the dogs and cat! Not that that is all that relevant ![]() Any views from people who have ipod touch would be greatly appreciated. We've had a rough couple of years and this is the first opportunity I have to get her something really nice so I want to do it right as she is a good girl. Thanks in advance! |

Kids will use up what ever amount of storage they are given on these devices so I would stick to 8GB and if it gets full up then she will have to learn to manage the contents by leaving off the stuff she doesn't use. This can be stored on a PC anyhow so you won't lose it.
The other reason that I wouldn't fork out extra for the 32GB version is that in a couple of years times I bet you that she will be wanting an iPhone to replace the iPod Touch! |

Agree with above. 8gb should be enough for a child. Once they fill it up, they can learn to be more selective about what they keep on it at any one time. It's just a matter of choosing what to sync from iTunes.

in a practical sense 8GB is probably anything from 60-130 albums. in rough numbers.

I guess it will be fine for a child.
As an adult, I have the 8gb one and it filled up incredibly quickly. I use it on my stereo. Luckily, I also have a smart phone for music out of doors with 16gb. Mind you if you download the spotify app, you can have plenty of music for free. |

Personally i would get the 32 gb.
With Apps, Music, movies etc....you are more likely to use all the space. |

Indeed. But if they are anything like my kids they will fill it with video and games. Most of it useless!

I have the 8GB iPod Touch, an I'm starting to come to its limit. I have a few apps, and around 1000 songs.

I was also looking to buy an iPod Touch for my wife, who already has a docking station as on the attached link. Does anybody else have this, as I'm a bit nervous that it isn't compatible with the iPod Touch; some people on Amazon seem to be saying it does work, whilst others are saying it doesn't.
(she already has an iPhone that works with it, so I'm hoping the iPod Touch also will). http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-SRSGU10...pr_product_top Thanks. |

I am still thinking that the 8gb will be the way to go for now. As I said earlier she doesn't have huge amounts of music anyway, I think she will want to put a fair few games on and pictures of our dogs and cat. She is an uncomplicated little soul. As has already been said, she can always change/update content for variety.
Thanks again to everyone for their input, it has put my mind at rest and the great mental debate has closed

These days even 32gigs won't be enough if you want to add everything, so it's about adding what you need. Don't auto sync your music, set it to manually add music. Around the house you have full access to your itunes library anyway through wifi as long as your PC is on. That's a great feature. And since the touch needs charged almost daily, it's easy just to add what you want to listen to for the day.

I would say 8gb is a little on the small size tbh.
My son as a 32gb 4th gen and he is only 9 and fills it up quickly. He is always downloading apps and games and some are over 400mb each Have even seen games at almost 1gb |

Its not an iPod but have you considered something like the Sony Xperia Play which is about the same price?
I quite imagine it works fine without using a Sim and has many advantages and disadvantages. Certainly an idea to Play with. |

Showing my complete techno f*ckwittery here, but if you download game apps onto the Ipod touch, can you take them off and keep them on the computer and switch them around like you can with the music, so she can just vary what she has stored on it?
My son but fifa on his and its not really a girls game but your taking over 10% for 1 app on a 8gb. Its was something like 1.2gb. there will be games your daughter might want 8gb will go before you know it. |

she will need to know how to actually store the stuff on her ipod so she will need someone who is good on computers. itunes can get very complicated if she has music in cds you have to import etc and pictures you have to make a new folder and its not on the actual itunes also videos can be even more complicated
i think mines an 8gb and i still have loads of room left i have lots of apps and some music |

Kids seem more adept at working out how to do things on these gadgets than us adults.

Thanks for the continuing advice and comments. I still haven't actually bought it, but I'm still for financial reasons as much as anything leaning towards the 8GB and she can just manage her content.
I'm pretty sure she will pick it all up quite easily, she is very confident about things like that, and is helped by the fact that they use ipod touch in their technology lessons. I'm constantly amazed at the stuff kids get to do at school these days! |

I wouldn't have thought it was robust enough for a 9 year old.
