Staff at the West Valley City Animal Shelter in Utah have now agreed they will not try to kill Andrea again.

Oh how nice of them

PR director Aaron Crim said: "This cat obviously really wants to live. Let's give it a chance to find a permanent home."

What a shame they didn't think about that before only giving her 30 days to find a home or gas her.

what do you think happens to all the pound dogs and dogs found wandering the streets if they are not claimed, hundreds of animals are killed every year if a rescue place can not be found for them, clearly this one is immune to being gassed but this is a reality for loads of animals out there every day

WHAT....disgusting. That's simply disgusting, after 30days they kill un-homed animals. AWFUL. This shelter is doing the wrong thing....hardly any shelters put cats/dogs down cause no one will home them...they just simply stay at the shelter til a new owner comes along and decideds to adopt.

The UK shelters that are 'no kill' are very picky about what dogs/cats they take in.

In my area most of the unclaimed dogs that are picked up as strays are PTS after their seven days. They don't even try finding a rescue place for the Staffies.

At least that shelter tries for 30 days.

Where are all the stray animals that need a place supposed to go if there is no room? Do they get PTS before they have had their 30 days 'cause a place is being taken up?

Don't blame the shelter - blame the people that abandon their pets and the breeders that treet them as comodities.

yes i find it unbelievable that people have no idea what goes on with these animals every day as you say most pounds etc have a seven day policy so 30 days is generous.

A lot of rescues only take gifted dogs so they know their history, dogs found wandering the streets and strays face a death sentence in general unless a rescue place can be found.

The thing that is horrifying is the ignorance of people but if they dont see it, it is not there problem, thats why when us in doggy corners talk about breeding restrictions and castration and spaying, tighter ownership laws we know why we are saying it and the fact that hundreds of animals face this, people break their hearts over these dogs every day begging for spaces and stays of execution as they have done nothing wrong but be abandoned or get lost

most do the rest are picky what they take and if they stay for too long they will be executed too to free up a space as discussed above execution orders are in general 7 days for strays in pounds all around the country just because its not publicised every day doesnt mean it doesnt happen the research is all out there if you speak to smaller rescues, breed rescues and the pounds

That's just not true I'm afraid. My colleague took on a young dog from Battersea Dogs Home that was just 24 hours away from being euthanased. Her own dog had just died and she was contacted by someone who works there about this particular dog. He was only a year old and perfectly healthy but the shelter only has an allotted period of time to re-home animals, they need to keep providing space for new animals.

I hate to think of healthy young (or even old) animals being put to sleep because no one wants them. My own rescue cats were kept in shelter for 6 months + before I took them but I don't think Cats Protection put down healthy animals - I'm not too sure about the RSPCA but I think they're probably the same as CP.

There are just too many unwanted animals in shelters

Edit: wrong link.

The RSPCA put down thousands of healthy animals a year.

I know that there must be a long time limit for cats then, much longer than 30 days. Someone on this forum volunteers at a RSPCA cat shelter and she has assured me that she only sees cats that have health problems put to sleep.

I keep an eye on my local RSPCA website and some cats are advertised for 6 months +. I like to think they are taken off the website because they have found new homes rather than they have been put to sleep.

A lot goes on you don't always hear about.

I do recognise that irresponsible ownership is the route cause of unwanted animals and the RSPCA have a very difficult job. But they are also very selective in what they publicise. It's not nice from whatever angle you come at it from.

AFAIK each RSPCA branch is fairly autonomous so policies on how long they will keep an animal will vary.
