Had a play with this in CPW yesterday.
In terms of hardware, the Lumia 800 looks and feels great. It's got this curved unibody, feels good in the hand and attractive. The CPW has a working model on display, so had a look at the OS; WP7. I was pretty impressed, though not sure if I'd want to go down this route for my next phone (6 months time). The tiles were quick to respond to the touch, the screen is high quality, scrolling on the internet is slick indeed. Would take some getting used to. No real lag that would cause a user to balk when navigating around. When these come out in their various colours, can see them being a hit with a younger demographic. Handset price probably needs to drop to about £300 on SIM free though.
However, drawbacks for me include the non-expandable memory, the Xbox branding for games and the reliance on Zune for music synching. I've read that you must use Zune Player to synch mp3s, whereas I tend to use WMP for transfers / drag n drop.
I don't want an iTunes type store / interface messing with my music library but if anyone who uses a WP7 can advise on this, happy to hear.

You can prepare your audio files outside Zune software and only use it to transfer the files to your phone. I tag my files with mp3tag and then transfer them with Zune. And unlike iTunes it's bidirectional. With a bit of hacking it's possible to see the phone folders with media files as drives, but since they are playing nice, it's not necessary. I actually like the Zune software how it works and looks. 16GB is a lot if you have no or only a couple of videos, but yes you will run out of space eventually. I do not use the phone as media player often, so the size is acceptable for me. I think they will work on extendable memory and other things if they get a chance.

Non-expandable memory is correct for the new generation of windows phones. Not sure what your problem with xbox branding is. There are two kinds of games: games with xbox live branding and games without. You don't need an Xbox or Xbox Live Gold subscription to play games.
Yes, Zune is used for syncing media with the phone like iPhone uses iTunes. Two points are: WiFi sync means you can sync without having to physically connect the phone to the computer, second is that you will rarely find a bad word about Zune. Most people say it has a great UI. Give it a try, it's free and should automatically pick up your existing music library.
Back to topic: I will be receiving my Nokia on Monday!
You may not have the expandable memory however skydrive is included - Also with getting the lumia it comes with a music streaming app built in that is free to use which is great. Getting mine soon!!
I really like the look of this phone, as a former iPhone owner and current Android owner the thing I like about this phone is it looks very slick and user friendly. In terms of the market, I think it stands a good chance of being a hit with people who either can't afford/think they aren't getting good value for money with apple and those who don't enjoy Android for various reasons (myself falling into that category). I am certainly very interested with it.

Have to say I am glad I got the Nokia, the OLED screen is just amazing, even with my sausage fingers typing on the touch screen is the best I have ever used. So far not a single slip or wrong letter used.
The Zune software is genius, it will compress your MP3 files if for example your files are ripped at 320kb you can tell it to send it to your phone as 128kb.
All updates are done via Zune, it automaticaly backs up your phone wirelessly when it detects the phone has been plugged into the mains for 10 mins. Its like a portal for the phone.
It's so much quicker than my old HTC HD2, the software is miles better than the old Mobile Windows 6. You can add as many email accounts as your heart desires, the way it puts your text, tweets, facebook messages etc all under one place makes life easier. The games are incredible.
I love this phone... Get one...The only down side is just 16gb on board memory and you cant add an SD card.

i'd be tempted by the n800 and i'm in my upgrade window. but i don't think it's a big enough upgrade over my N8.

im currently undecided on this phone!
Ive had my iPhone 4 for 17months and had the 3GS for a year before that, and not sure if i fancy a change or not!
how much is it sim free? might be worth doing it that way! plus how well does it work with Macs? if anyone has the 2
I got my Nokia Lumia 800 last night. Spent a couple of hours transitioning over from my HTC HD7 (re-downloading apps mainly), all my contacts were magically re-downloaded from the cloud.

Sim free is about £400-£440. Three sells it on payg.
If the Nokia was a touch bigger (say 4.0" instead of 3.7", had an RGB subpixel matrix instead of a PenTile matrix, a slightly more capacious battery say 1600mAh, and 2mm less thick - it would be my perfect phone).
As it is, it's a great phone. I didn't like the PenTile matrix initially, after coming from the HD7's TFT LCD but I don't notice it much now.
(I would say I personally prefer the colour accuracy of LCD to the colour saturation of AMOLED screens but this screen is very readable in sunlight despite setting it to the lowest brightness setting).

I got the phone on Saturday last week and have been using it since then, i previously owned the HTC Trophy 7 for a while so am quite used to the WP7 OS, again any questions feel free to ask away.
I have had one issue that i have come across and i think it relates to the phone being connected to bluetooth and a car kit, when disconnecting i am unable to access items within the settings menu such as the WIFI menu/Bluetooth option and have to perform a reset of the device to kick it back in.
It does allow me to switch my device off however pressing the powerbutton will not get the device to come back to life. Other than that i have had no other issues.

There is a Mac version of the Zune/WP7 sync software. I've not used it, but I know there is a version and I've not heard any bad reports about it.

It's a single core processor as the Windows Phone software cannot handle multiple cores at present.
Having played with one in my local '3' store; I'm impressed.
The touch screen is fluid, Windows Phone 7.5 is fast.
If I hadn't got an iPhone I'd be seriously looking at the Nokia Lumia.

Sounds as if you haven't gone to a store and played with one. Please go and physically handle all the handsets you are interested in, be they the Lumia, iPhone, whatever.

I have downloaded a few games now to really put the phone to the test and the loading speeds are amazing for a single core device, personally i think dual/quad core is overated unless the OS actually uses them to the full potential. WP7 uses the chipset really well and delivers a fantastic experience.
I have no experience of the Nokia Lumia 800 but it looks very nice and when Windows 8 (which I have some experience of) gets launched I can see how the Metro screen will sync and provide a similar user experience on a tablet or PC like on the phone display.
I have Android now but it's early days and the seamless mobile and computing experience might end up something else. It could have been Apple's OS that won but their computers are ridiculously expensive so they have no chance. Microsoft along with Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG and others could be onto something that combines the mobile platform with personal computing at an affordable price for folks.
I have Android now but it's early days and the seamless mobile and computing experience might end up something else. It could have been Apple's OS that won but their computers are ridiculously expensive so they have no chance. Made that mistake with an android phone.
Do Orange stores still use dummy phones or can you play with a working one? Not sure if there's a 3 Store in Bath
