But they are still in the top 20, so surely sales must be over 500k by now?
How much have albums (in general) sold in the last couple of weeks? |

Cher Lloyd's first two singles peaked at their debut positions - Swagger Jagger at number one, and follow-up With Ur Love (feat. Mike Posner) at number four - but third single Want U Back improves 56-26 (9,730 sales) on its second week on the list, and helps to stabilise parent album Sticks & Stones, which moves 30-28 (5,613 sales). Meanwhile, her fellow X Factor season seven (2010) graduates One Direction register the third Top 40 hit from their debut album, Up All Night. After reaching number one with debut single What Makes You Beautiful, and number three with Gotta Be You, they debut at number 28 (9,446 sales) with One Thing.
One Direction's album has sold significantly more than season seven winner Matt Cardle's debut set, Letters, and even Lloyd is catching up. Sales to midnight on Saturday are as follows: Up All Night – 499,850, Letters – 245,271 and Sticks & Stones – 198,199. Like Lloyd and One Direction, Cardle reached number one with his debut single (When We Collide) but had to settle for sixth place with second single Run For Your Life, and came a real cropper with third single Starlight, which limped to number 185 on the sales tally, despite getting enough exposure to reach number 23 on the radio airplay chart. A fourth 2010 X Factor contestant, Rebecca Ferguson, has also sold more albums than Cardle. Despite thus far taking only one single - the number 10 hit Nothing Is Real But Love - from her debut album, Heaven, the set has sold 405,932 copies in seven weeks . Really interesting to the see the effect this article is having on some Ats. Lol!!!!!! ![]() ![]()

I am familiar with the US radio system because I have followed some Ameircan Idol(s) for a while, and I started to look into it to stop having to rely on the often contradictory opinion of fans/non-fans
![]() The US/Canadian radio is divided into formats (music genres) that chart separately. Radio Stations belong to one format, although occasionally some move to another one. Here's the format list by Mediabase which is the most important radio monitoring service, with the XF Artist who received some spins on the format already, and links to the Mediabase top 40 reports for the format (not to be confused with 'Top 40' format!!!! :US Formats AC: Adult Contemporary - http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Active Rock Alternative Christian AC Christian CHR Christian Inspirational Christian Rock Country - http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Gospel Hot AC: Hot Adult Contemporary http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Latin Urban Mainstream Rock Regional Mexican Rhythmic: Dance music http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Smooth AC: Smooth Adult Contemporary Spanish Contemporary Top 40 (1D) : Radio 1 style music, with less alternative and diversity - http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Triple A (Matt, Rebecca) : I'd say it's singer/songwriter style music) http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Tropical Latin Urban http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Urban AC (Rebecca) : Urban Adult Contemporary http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insi...owyear=y&dpt=n Canadian Formats: Canada-AC Canada-ActiveRock Canada-AltRock Canada-Country Canada-Hot Ac (Matt, 1D) Canada-Top 40 (1D) I have to stop here for now, but be back soon

Ok, lesson two
![]() When labels want a song to be played, they send it electronically the stations belonging to the formats they are interested in. They also may give an 'adds date' for some formats, which is a way of coordinating airplay and tell radio stations that this is when the would really like them to add a song to their playlist. They don't always give an adds date, and at times they just throw a song out there and hope it sticks somehow ![]() Songs are usually sent to radio a few weeks before the adds date. Stations may play a song without adding it officially to their playlist, and sometimes they add it but don't play it, but usually they do! There are always a few stations that add before the 'adds date', particulalry for well established artists, and most stations add slowly after the 'adds date'. Radio adds for Mediabase monitored stations are listed on the Mediabase Addboard site, and here's the links for the current XF artists: NRBL: http://addboard.mediabase.com/AddDet...ngcde=FERGNRBL WMYB: http://addboard.mediabase.com/AddDet...ngcde=ONE+WMYB Starlight:http://addboard.mediabase.com/AddDet...&sngcde=CARDS4 WUB: http://addboard.mediabase.com/AddDet...sngcde=LLOYWYB Now, although NRBL and WMYB have adds, they are not displayed on the front page because it only shows the adds for the current week and the week starts on Wednesday. To view the list of stations that have added in previous week, click on 'View Song Add History'. You should get this: For NRBL: Station Reporting Spins LW Added Chart Wk# Added Chart Rank Format Market Label Owner Market Rank Date Added KTBG-FM Pub 0 0 0 Triple A Kansas City Columbia NONE 32 1/23/2012 WJMR-FM * Pub 8 0 0 Urban AC Milwaukee Columbia Saga Communications Inc. 38 1/24/2012 WTMD-FM Pub 1 0 0 Triple A Baltimore Columbia Towson University 22 1/23/2012 For WMYB: Station Reporting Spins LW Added Chart Wk# Added Chart Rank Format Market Label Owner Market Rank Date Added CFUN-FM Pub 28 0 0 Canada-Top 40 Vancouver Sony Rogers Broadcasting Ltd Media 3 1/24/2012 CJFM-FM Pub 5 0 0 Canada-Hot AC Montreal Sony Astral Media 2 11/14/2011 CKIS-FM Pub 19 0 0 Canada-Top 40 Toronto Sony Rogers Broadcasting Ltd Media 1 1/17/2012 Sirius Hits * Pub 67 0 0 Top 40 >SiriusXM Sony SiriusXM 0 10/11/2011 Let's use this from NRBL as an example: WJMR-FM * Pub 8 0 0 Urban AC Milwaukee Columbia Saga Communications Inc. 38 1/24/2012 WJMR-FM * : Station Code - The '*' means auto-add, I'll explain later. Pub: Station status for Mediabase. Act = activator, Pub = published (for 'monitored' stations) . Only monitored stations are included in their official charts. 8 Spins Last Week (from Sunday to Saturday included) 0: Added Chart Week: Number of charting weeks in the format top 40 when the song was added. It's 0 for because NRBL has charted yet. 0: Added Chart Rank: Chart position in the format when the song was added. Urban AC : Format Milwaukee: Market. Area covered by the station. Columbia: Artist Label (or distributing label in the US) Saga Communications Inc. : Station Owner 38 Market Rank. Station are ranked according to the area they cover, from 1 (New York stations), to 300+ for small town stations. 1/24/2012 Date added. From the 'Song History', click on 'View Current Page' to return to the main page, then you can click on 'Stations Not Added' to view last week spins from stations that have not added the song. To get a different sort order, click on any column heading, so to view last week spins, click on 'Spins LW'. Adds dates that I know of are so far: NRBL: 13 Feb on Triple A (from All Access site) http://www.allaccess.com/triple-a/future-releases - login required. WMYB: 28 Feb on Top 40 (from FMQB). It was also listed for the 14 Feb by All Access, but it's gone from there now. WUB: 28 feb on Top 40 (also called CHR, or POP!!!) (from FMQB) http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=16691 So WMYB and WUB have the same adds date on the same format ![]() ![]() All Access and FMQB are radio indstry news sites. All Access is a great source of information, and give more detailed Mediabase reports than Mediabase themselves. You need to register, but it is free. The only drawback is that they'll send you bucket loads of update emails, so you may want to use or create a low key email address. To answer the question from manderley on whether the adds for NRBL are good ot not, I'd say anything at this stage, from an unknown artist and three weeks before the adds date (and as far as I know, no adds date on Urban AC) is good. I'll stop here for now, but please ask if it is not clear. The system seems overly complicated at first

Blimey that is some complicated system?
So where do sales come into for the charts? Or do they make the billboard through plays only? |

So where do sales come into for the charts? Or do they make the billboard through plays only? Radio also looks at sales though, and are more liklely to play songs that do well sales wise. But again, it's a chichen and egg situation because little airplay = little sales!!! The reference chart in the US is the Billboard Hot 100 which takes into consideration both airplay and sales. Billboard also has a digital song chart, which is a single chart based on sales only. It has its value and importance, but it's not THE reference chart. For the record the US have completely abandonned physical singles. It's all download only. Also to complicate everything, Billboard have their own radio charts, but the most relevant for the industry are the Mediabase reports. They are very similar but slightly different. |

Bad news all-round then, Matt's out of the top 40, Rebecca is tumbling down through the charts and in the singles chart Cher & One Direction's new releases are moving in the wrong direction. Hopefully they all do better in the 2nd half of the week
