They've sold over 4 million records worldwide in 6 months.
Also JLS released their first album 3 years ago, you need to compare what they are selling now.

Yeah fair enough they got international sales.

But, in UK they're quite huge but considering their hysteria in the UK i'd expect them to be on a lot more sales than 580k. At least a million i would expected in the UK for this record.

I do think personally they and the Wanted are over-rated but thats just me.

Exactly - Thats just you. I guess international success means a lot more, considering JLS would do anything to be in 1D's shoes at the moment.

No, I too think they ARE overrated. at least JLS can learn one or two dance moves and each member has better vocals all the 1D boys combined.

JLS sold 1 million records after just 8 weeks right?
I remember reading an article about the top selling albums in 2009 and JLS were number 6 with a million sales, the list was made January 2010 and the album was only released November time.
I actually expected 1D to have sold more than JLS but they've actually sold half in 6 months compared to JLS' 2 months (UK only)

Olly's second album is doing surprisingly well! Was really expecting it to flop but it's doing amazingly

You can't compare 2008 record sales with now. Record sales have been declining year on since then.

I think both JLS and 1D are very talented but unfortunately USA wasn't ready for boyband resurgence 2/3 yrs ago. Apparently they are now going to have a pop at USA but only time will tell if they have left it too late.

Oh IMO just because JLS do choreographed dancing doesn't make them any more talented. I am sure if 1D wanted to do choreography they would. If they can learn songs they can learn dance moves. They have said in various interviews they don't want to do choreographed moves it isn't their thing. Luckily enough fans agree with them

1 million records in that amount of time does not really happen anymore unless your Adele really.
And the lack of dancing is irelevant. There's loads of artists who don't have choreographed moves.

As Twingle and Shauna have said, you don't sell 1million records in a few months anymore unless you are Adele. JLS released their album a week before One Direction, but have sold less. 1D have sold over 2 million albums worldwide in 7 months, that is a great achievement. What Makes you beautiful has sold nearly 4 million copies.

Also the boys obviously do not need choreographed dance moves, they've done very well without it.

you mean JLS's latest album sold less than 1D's and it was released a week before the boys'?

and yeah, what's choreographed dance moves got to do with it? that's so 90s... lolz!!

Bit unfair to compare sales from the third album of one act to the sales of another's debut album.

That's exactly what I was thinking

And, in reply to an earlier poster, choreographed dance moves make everything look better IMO. I'd much rather watch JLS singing and dancing, than One Direction singing and jumping about! It also shows that JLS have more control over their voices because they can sing(and, in Aston's case, hit ridiculously amazing notes!) while doing all that dancing, and most of OD struggle to sing in tune even when they're not moving!

My opinion of course

We can only compare the sales of the first albums, because that's all 1D have released at present.
There is a two years gap between JLS and 1D's first release, and in two years album sales haven't fallen that much: 7% in 2010 and 6% in 2011.

Album sales have fallen twice as sharply in the US though, and even reaching gold (500k) is becoming an achievement. The fact that 1D are nearly there in 5 weeks without the help of a talent competition is quite remarkable, in my opinion.

You can compare if you adjust the numbers. The equivallent of 1 million in 2009 ('JLS' release year - not 2008 or even more ancient) would be 850k in 2011 ('Up All Night' release year - not 2012 or even more recent).

I agree with you Chi. Even though album sales haven't fallen that much in the UK, there's still a big difference between album sales now and 3 years ago. Adele, is very much a big deal, but let's not forget it took her about 6 months to sell a million albums in the UK.
Selling over half a million albums today makes you one of the biggest sellers in the country.

I also agree about the U.S market, and can go as far as saying the reason 1D have done so well in U.S, Canada and Australia is because they have bigger fanbases in those countries, and I think they will always do better in those places, which is not a bad thing really, any UK artists would love to be in that position.
