Tablet performance query - big difference Advent Vega vs Archos 70?

Hi,

I had set my heart on a refurbished Advent Vega from the PC World Ebay outlet but they don't have any stock and I'm getting impatient waiting for more to come in

The other good deal at present is the Archos 70 from the Car Phone Warehouse for £99. (It has a smaller screen but at least it is capacitive.)

On some reviews, people have complained that the Archos can stutter when playing some video files, iPlayer etc.

I know it only has 256MB of memory, an A8 processor but does the Tegra 2 processor/chipset (and extra memory) in the Vega really make that much difference? If it does, then I'll just have to be patient and wait for a refurbed Vega!

Thanks for any comments.

Don't forget for video playback that in additional to dual-core CPU, the Vega also has hardware video decoder to help things along.

I can play 720p mp4 and iplayer no problems.

There are some refurbished vegas on ebay but I think they price has gone up to around £150 or £160.

I can't see 256MB mattering to much for single apps.
256MB is not too bad when you consider there is no permanent running phone app in the background.

I think it also claims to do 1080p.

A little warning about the Archos 7 or should I say a buyer beware warning.

Tesco are selling the Archos 7 HT for £99 and the CPW are selling the Archos 7 IT for £99.

Two complete different machines and very easy to get caught out like my grandson did the other day.

He came home with a Archos HT from Tesco and told me it had a capacitive screen and was loaded with Android 2.2. I think he must have read a review for the IT not realising that the Tesco one is in fact a HT one.

I was almost fooled myself for a moment then realised the different between these two machines and exchange it before we un-did the packaging on the 7 HT.

So short warning, don’t get your HT’s mixed up with your IT’s.

Just to add for those not in the know, IT = internet tablet and HT = home tablet.

At the moment methinks there is only one Archos 70.

A quite different breed.

Yes quite, and it's worst that what I thought then with there being 3 different Archo’s with the 7 IT, 7HT and the 7o Internet Tablet.

Don’t suppose there is an Archos 7o Home Tablet is there?

I can see a lot of parents waking on Christmas morning thinking they have got a bargain of a high performance stallion of a tablet for their kids were as in fact they have got a donkey, if they have not read their labels right i.e mixed up their 7 IT’s and 7 HT’s with their 70 IT’s .

nearly got caught out with this , in fact did get caught out , bought the archos 7ht from tesco then found cpw doing it for £25 less , ended up returning to tesco and buying the archos 70 from cpw , according to the salesman though the only difference is a webcam .......

Not true. The differences are more than that (I think the webcam is the same). The 101IT has more power (better CPU).

I know this is slightly off topic but I bought an Advent Vega last weekend, flashed it with Honeycomb/Vegacomb (Android 3.2) and I couldn't be happier with it. I love it!

I would get the Vega Refurb. More powerful and better performance. Also, has a lot of developer support behind it so you can be 80% sure you're going to get updates. Also has full sized USB and HDMI ports.

There is the Arnova 10 G2. Same Price as 101IT.

Not quite as powerful as the Vega (Single core) but has a 12-month warranty... Was £150 at Maplin but they seem to no longer be selling it. It can play 1080p video no problem and has a full sized USB (like the Vega)

Update:

They're still selling it here
