I'm off to Florida in February and want an iPad 32GB wifi. I know because of sim cards it's not wise to buy a US iPhone, but, are there any reasons (other than UK duty, VAT considerations etc) for not buying an iPad whilst I'm there (assuming I can get the money together)?

No it'll work fine. It's identical to the UK ones.

32gb iPad2 Wifi, $599 + Florida sales tax @ 6% = $634.94 (£397), although whenever I go to California/New York I usually can get away without paying tax if I pay in cash (some shops will do that just to get a sale) so always knock off a few bob that way.

UK price is £479 (including 20% VAT) I believe. Total saving of £82. Not bad really for a trip to Florida. Enjoy your holiday OP

but you can get a ipad cheaper than the rrp any way

I paid £410 online for a 32gb wifi model last month so not a big saving as it seems

Because it's an american model, you won't get support for it or a replacement from a UK apple store if it goes wrong - you'll need to return it to the states.

I'm pretty sure that point has come up before and people have said it's not true.

I don't know if it's true or not. It used to be the case. Anyway, Apple would be within their rights not to offer any warranty as you're buying the device for export!

Do you really want to risk it for such an expensive purchase?

As I remember it's 50/50, they dont "have to" help you, but in many cases do.

Here's a couple of extracts from their warranty terms and conditions - it basically says they may honour the warranty or they might not, depending on whether you've registered the device properly etc.

Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally
sold the hardware product.

You may be responsible
for shipping and handling charges if the product cannot be serviced in the country in which
service is requested. If you seek service in a country that is not the country of original purchase,
you will comply with all applicable import and export laws and regulations and be responsible for
all custom duties, V.A.T. and other associated taxes and charges. Where international service is
available, Apple may repair or exchange defective products and parts with comparable products
and parts that comply with local standards. In accordance with applicable law, Apple may require
that you furnish proof of purchase details and/or comply with registration requirements before
receiving warranty service.

Bought the iPad One for my wife last year from the states, registered etc with no issues.
Zero problems at all using it over here in the UK apart from the charger, which cost me all of £2.30 for the adapter from Tescos.

I bought an Ipod touch in New York a few years back. The display started corrupting after a few months. I lost the receipt but tried contacting Apple anyway. I had no problems at all in getting a replacement Ipod from Apple - took just over a week from initial contact to receiving the new Ipod.
