hi all,

on my journey to work this morning I drove past a dead cat on the path. Think it was hit by a car. Its really upset me and gets me worried about my cat, where we live is quite but I still worry about him being hit and left for dead-am Ibeing silly? I reported it to the RSPCA straight away.

No your not being silly. It's natural to feel like that. Im sure most owners do feel like that, that's thr trouble with cats that venture out...we have no control where they go, it's a risk. That's why more and more people these days keep cats indoors. I do...well only at night, during the day they are free to roam.

Reporting it to the RSPCA was a good thing, i hope they come out soon and not wait days on end. Check again this evening, if it's still there call your locat council...they usually come out quicker.

we are lucky were we are we have a park area and communal garden for him and he usually stays in there. In the summer hes out near enough all day and night (he wont come in I try and coax him in but he likes to sunbathe!) but in the winter he stays in. He usually hides on the bushes by our back door so Idoubt he would be injured but the thought of him being hit then just left makes me feel sad. He doesnt wear a collar so there would be no way of the person finding us, having said that I would notice him missing and would go out looking.

I try to take a look again this evening, hopefully he or she is not there anymore

Cant see the RSPCA coming out to a dead animal its a waste of resources, the council maybe or a civilian may take it to a vet to be scanned for a chip but a lot of places wont even scan dead cats am sure it will be removed though not by the RSPCA

If cats tend to stay close to home and away from roads then chances aren nothing could happen. I knoww the thought your having cause i have it too, loads of times.

I wasnt to sure what to do I said that I thought it was dead but as I was driving past it could be alive and badly hurt, but that I thought it was probably dead.

You gotta go check this cat out. It could well be dead or really injured. Council are much more likely to pick it up rather than RSPCA.

Im going to go and see if its still there after work. Im hoping he or she isnt

I reported a dead cat to the RSPCA once and the person who answered the phone said: "What do you expect me to do about it?" Won't make that mistake again

It is very upsetting OP. I found a large adult fox dead once on a main pedestrian route and I think it was the council that sorted it.

the rspca won't send anyone out, it's more likely to be picked up by the council or a civilian as has been mentioned

i found a cat at the side of the road myself once, quite near to a school, while i was riding my bike home from college
it was a cold day and she was stiff as a board, bless her, so she'd been there a little while
i wasn't going to leave her there to be completely flattened into the road, as she was next to the kerb where people tended to park.
i went and knocked on a door for a carrier bag to take her to the vets to be scanned
woman in the house i went to gave me a clear plastic carrier bag and suggested i just put the cat in the bin up the road :/

i rode a good mile and a half out of my way to take him/her to the vet to be scanned for a chip and i honestly would do it again
i hope he/she was chipped and the owners informed, i never saw any missing cat notices... hopefully the owners found out :/

It wasnt me who hit it I promise. To some Im being silly but it did really upset me. I didnt get chance to see if its still there but I hope somebody came out and took it away. I got home and gave my cat a big hug and kiss and told him I loved him, nearly cried! Sorry guys im so sensitive about these kind of things

Check with the police - drivers are legally obliged to report hitting cats or dogs - although they probably didn't. That's why I have house cats!!

nonsense. You dont have to report cats being run over.

Dogs yes, but it is only guidance and not a criminal offence not to report a hit of a dog

Cats are not that important to warrant a reporting to the police.

I once came cross a wee cat dead on the road, asked all the neighbouring houses but no-one knew who he was so I took him home and buried him in my back garden. Cried my eyes out but sadly never did find out who he was or where he came from.

Yes you do only have to report an accident involving a dog.

It's not that cats are not important, as you say, it is because it is illegal to let dogs roam, but cats are allowed to roam free. Nobody is liable to prosecution as with a dog.

A few years ago I saw a Cat get run over by a van. It upset me so much that I felt sick for days.
The trouble with a lot of Cats when they cross the road is if they see a car coming they won't rush to the other side of the road, a lot of them turn around and walk back to the side of the road they just came from! Consequently endangering themselves more.

what if by slamming into a car you killed a child in it??? Does it not bother you??

cats run into cars, drivers dont...do you think drivers like slamming into animals and cause dents in their car, let alone having to fish its mangled bloodied body out from the wheel arch??

Your attitude makes me wretch.

One evening a few weeks ago my neighbour knocked on my door to check my cats were in.They were. She said a cat was laying injured just opposite us on the pavement across the road. I ran over to it suspecting I knew who it was as was similar colouring to mine and I was right. It was my friends cat up the road. She was alive but you could tell her back was broken. I went and got my friend, we went to the emergency vets where sadly her cat was put to sleep. It was devestating. What I couldn't get my head around was the fact that some callous scumbag had knocked her down and just left her there to die on a freezing cold pavement. Accidents happen and we all have to accept that but how long does it take to stop your car and knock a few doors. My friends poor cat was a few houses down from her own, so not hard to find. It was a very sad night.

well that would make you a nasty idiot, what percentage of people run over cats on purpose? Yet you would advocate injuring innocent people for the life of a cat that stepped out in traffic.

I saw a bloke clip a springer spaniel earlier in the week, luckily i managed to avoid it he didn't quite, should i have taken a baseball bat to his windscreen? Because he didn't make the dog run into traffic on a 40mph road and i sure as hell dont think given a chance he would have wanted to hit it - luckily the dog ran back off pretty sharpish and seemed fine.

I was going too pick up my daughters and i saw this beatiful big ginger cat lying on the verge near the church near us. I stopped the car and run across. I never seen this cat before but i knew who's it was. So i had too go and get her. She only just moved in to the villiage a couple of months before as well. It was her beloved cat. The next day i brought her a little bush too plant near for him. She then brought my daughter 2 masive big easter eggs each. We have been friends ever since. Still think of her cat and i still remember the day i found henry
