Well I'm telling porkies on my info a bit because I don't technically live in Wolverhampton, I live in Darlaston. But no one outside of the Black Country has ever heard of that!

Yeah Tettnhall is nice still Heath town is erm another matter, my friend's boyfriend got mugged down there a few months ago, so hasn't changed much I think!

I'm only 14 and I know and love Think!

I mean Aretha is probably the greatest female singer of all time (she's not my personal favourite but in terms of acclaim she is there) and it's probably her 2nd most known song behind Respect. Plus the point that has been brought up about Tulisa's 'roots' is SO true, Aretha is the reason Tulisa/N-Dubz do what they do...

If you claimed to be an expert in classical music, and yet didn't know The Marriage of Figaro because "that Mozart guy is long dead and that song never was in the Top 20 in this country", would it be a good excuse?

That's what Aretha Franklin is to her genre. Someone like Mozart.

I must admit, when she first started off, I didn't know the song, until I heard the chorus. Even then I only know the song from an advert.

Totally agreed. At the end of the day, Tulisa is an R&B singer and Aretha is at the roots of R&B, just like Mozart is at the roots of classical. It doesn't matter than Think was a long time ago and didn't do well in the chart, it's an R&B classic and as someone in the position to judge other people on singing, her knowledge really should stretch at least as far as knowing Aretha Franklin for god's sake!

Not really, Mozart's genre was classical music. Aretha's genre was not urban music, she comes from a genre which urban music is related to. Big difference. Mozart is a legend in classical music, which is why you would expect anyone who is an expert in classical music to be aware of his works.

I understand what you're saying, but I respectfully disagree. To have worked so hard to achieve the position she has and show such ignorance toward one of the biggest works of one of her fore runners is pretty bad form.

To be fair the song is pretty forgettable, but there is no excuse for not knowing the song.

Tulisa goes on about her roots well tonight just shown us she know crap all about her roots as urban music came from RnB. And she was talking bullshit lies about her roots.

I think there needs to be a distinction made, here, between achieving a high chart position and having longevity. You cannot judge the success of a song purely on its chart position, otherwise "Mr. Blobby" would be more of a classic than "Thriller", "Radio Ga Ga", "We Are The Champions", and "Boys Are Back In Town". I think anybody would be hard pressed to make a convincing argument that it is.

Chart positions can be deceptive in other ways, too. The best selling single of 1987 was "Walk The Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was), despite its highest chart position being #10. This is because, although it didn't chart highly, it stayed in the charts for a long time.

There's no reason why anybody should know the song, but it is a huge, very well-known song, written and performed by someone who is widely believed to be one of the best musical artists of all time. And if you were a judge on a talent show you'd have thought that the very least you'd do is look it up on google when hearing it in rehearsals in order to avoid looking foolish.

you don't have to be 80 to know who Aretha Franklin is, just like you don't have to be about 2500 years old to know who Mozart is

Mozart's genre was classical music and a modern composer would also be in the genre of classical music, but Mozart is part of a sub genre of the Classical era of music (Classical Music has sub genres in the same way as pop does. For classical, you have Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, Romantic and Modern) and is widely regarded as the best composer to have ever lived.A composer working today will be in the Modern genre, which started at the beginning of the 20th Century. A 'Modern' composer (a sub genre in itself) will write music in an entirely different manner to that of a Classical composer or a Baroque Composer or a Romantic Composer, due to the natural evolution of the overall classical musical genre, but a Modern composer can trace the origins of his musical style back to the styles and forms set out by Classic Composers and the composition style of Mozart.

Aretha Franklin is from the Contemporary Popular musical genre as is Tulisa. Aretha is from the sub genre of R n B while Tulisa is from the sub genre of Urban music. Tulisa will write her songs in an entirely different manner to Aretha, but this is entirely due to the natural evolution of the contemporary popular musical genre and Tulisa as an Urban songwriter can trace the origins of her musical style back to the R n B style in which Aretha excelled.

Hope that didn't come across as patronising as that certainly wasn't my intention, but I wanted to show how the two are actually really similar.

Actually, reading the way she types ungrammatical drivel on purpose, I bet she does know the song. People who constantly insist they're telling the truth usually are liars. We see this sort of wheeze all the time on X Factor. Ought to be good for a few YouTube hits of Amelia's performance and a couple of headlines.

Think is a song that is played on American Idol like every single season. So I'm pretty sure lots of young people have heard of it. In other words, you don't have to be a music history buff to know of it, its a song that is already on current tv. Further wasn't Aretha's songs - including "think" if I remember correctly - sung at last year's Grammys?
