Youtube did not seem to help Tulisa did it? she like many would have thought 'ewwww that's my grand dads type of music it aint current' I hear this comment all the time. She did not even know what a balled was nor what rock was--- so much for all the technology at her disposal, like I said people are getting dumber and they are loved for it

After that, I could then sit at home for hours on end stretching my brain by watching repeats of Bullseye on Challenge followed by The X Factor.”

I dumbed down my grammar but well done if thats the best you have. Seems you cant argue the real points. Good diversion tactics, you know you are winning when they cant argue your points.

I'm a lot older than Tulisa and I didn't know that song. (I do know the Aretha version)

I don't think Amelia did herself any favours with that song tonight. Aretha's version would have been a lot better.

It is ignorant and offensive because it is a gross generalisation based on nothing but the posters own prejudice of todays young people, it may be accurate in regards to SOME people but definitely not all, as the OP is trying to suggest .

I'm 18 and I thought everyone had heard that song, but apparently not. Not all of our generation is 'ignorant'.... some people stick to new music usually, some people don't. My favourite band is The Smiths, but some people might prefer Nikki Minaj. Everyone's different.

No one says older people are ignorant of new music!!

So that still doesn't prove anything about a generation, only Tulisa.

Wouldn't normally have brought up the grammar point but you made a point about my generation being stupid while making grammar mistakes I wouldn't have made when I was 7 years old so...

I asked a simple question, why do you think there is a rise in popularity of dumb airheads like TOWIE, Katie Price, Katona, e.t.c?

Because there is an increase in demand for them. There was no demand for them in the 20th century. Why is this? Simple, it's a generation thing. More people like them who want to read about them.

if you know the Aretha version then you know the song

Nothing Amelia did with the song made it unrecogniseable as the Aretha song so i'm not sure what you mean

I agree with the OP to an extent. There will always be exceptions (they all seem to be here conveniently ), but I agree that shorter attention spans, looking for for instant gratification etc. are symptoms frequently exhibited by our generation.

On a different note though, I didn't know the song - but I think the issue (if there was one) was in Tulisa generalising that most people wouldn't know it. If I hear a song I don't recognise on X Factor, I assume that I'm probably the odd one out, not that everyone else musn't have heard it either. To be honest, I don't recognise a lot of the modern songs on the show, because I don't really listen to this kind of music in my spare time.

But yeah - it's a funny old thing for a judge to criticise ... if the performance is good enough, surely people who haven't heard the song might go out and listen to the original? I never heard Summertime when I was a child, but after hearing Leona and Ruth sing it I went and listened to Gerschwin's original and Ella Fitzgerald's famous rendition

Evidence?

Like your limited attention span, not even bothering to slow down and check your post for spelling mistakes and typos before pressing send?

And really, blaming twitter, facebook and social networks for decline in knowledge is a silly rehashed argument as old and ridiculous as the "TV making people stupid" arguments that were directed at the very generation you are lauding.

Evidence please, that "the youngster today is generally ignorant"?

I am not a young person but I find these kinds of opinions about them prohibiting and demoralising. Young people have a lot to offer and don't deserve to be painted in such a negative light, especially with baseless generalisations.

I didn't recognise the song from Amelia singing it as Aretha's. Perhaps it was the wrong song choice for her, it should have been sang with soul, perhaps would have been a better choice for Misha.

There are loads of betters songs Kelly could have given Amelia.

I am 57 and find your post ridiculous ,.I think young people now are well read , well travelled , well informed , open and accepting , non judgemental and generally great to be with .

Im the same age as tulisa, and no i didn't know the song, but how can anybody possibly know every single song ever!? There's new songs i know, and new songs i don't , and that's the same with old songs.

It's got nothing to do with ignorance, and i am certain you don't know every song there has ever been! No matter how big they was.

I never blame generations or anything else for a lack of musical knowledge.
I thought it was natural that when you hit about 13 or 14 you suddenly get the urge to go off on your own journey of musical discovery and absorb as much as you can, especially since it's about the age you start having an identity crisis and need to find out who you really are.

That's not for everyone obviously, but I'd have thought someone who loved music like Tulisa (and especially being hired as a judge) that she would know more than she seems to do.

Same here. I know the music of Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Queen, John Holt, The Eagles, Bon Jovi, 80's Lover's Rock, Mantronix, UB40, Aretha, Mary J, Tina and Ike Turner, INXS, Tears for Fears, Phil Collins, NWA, SWV, Xscape - the list could go on. All because of music that was played around me as I grew up - its nothing to do with her age or generation.
