I bought a 38E which fit me but I also bought a 38F which is way too small around the back.

Surely the 38F should be bigger shouldn't it? Anyone know?

The back size will be exactly the same, the only thing bigger about 38F is the cup size.

The E/F sizing is the actual breast size, the 38 is the size around the back. You should try going up to a 40?

You need to be measured properly. I suggest going to somewhere like Bravissimo.

My ex was wearing 38H bras when I met her; when she was measured properly she was found to be 34JJ. The different size made her figure look much better, and was a lot more comfortable.

I have been. The 38E does fit me. I just expected the 38F to be bigger but it wasn't. As both came from the same place and weren't expensive this is probably why

sometimes it's down to the shape of the bra as well. I find I go up a size with balconette bras.

and if there is even a little padding/foam lining in the cups.
got a bra for the mrs from the 'curvy kate' range, she's normally a 32GG and had to change it up to a 32H because of the foam lining.

Thats a really good point, I vary such a lot in size dependent on the style.

It depends on the make of Bra and the style. I got fitted recently and I came out with two different sizes iin two different styles, the bigger size doesn't fit as well as the smaller size. In fact the bigger cup seems smaller than the smaller cup because it has less material and smaller wires at the front.

Must get myself measured. I've been saying it for years and never got around to it.

You really should. I have been different shapes over the years and at times have guessed at my bra size. When I've been measured or measured myself it has made a world of difference.

The fit is so much better and you can just see the silhouette is better. Get measured or get a tape measure - you won't regret it.

Edit: But as others say, it can differ on the type of bra but really it needs to be done.

Bravissimo are worth their weight in gold, in my opinion.

I had been measured at M&S all through my teens, and when I stopped growing, I had reached (in their opinion) a 36 DD. My mum kept saying that it couldn't be right that I was a 36, because I was just a skinny little thing with big boobs.

Bravissimo came on the scene shortly afterwards. I went and got properly fitted without silly measuring tapes and I was not a 36DD. I was in fact a 32 G. Something of a difference, no?

When I saw myself, I couldn't believe the difference. They had been lifted up so high, they were almost under my chin. They looked amazing! The woman just rolled her eyes when I said I had been fitted at M&S before!

In my experience, the cheaper the bra, the more dodgy the fit. M&S attempted to go in the big sizes, going up to a J cup. They got non-stop complaints about the poor support, poor fit etc. Similarly La Senza do quite big sizes but they are very small compared to the professional bra companies and don't match up to official cup sizes.

If you're bigger than a DD, you're better off with the experts in larger sizes- Panache, Freya, Fantasie and so on.

M&S have a terrible reputation for their fitting. Also a lot of places still use the old add on 4 system which just doesn't work.
Definitely agree - go to somewhere that fits rather than just measures. There's nothing wrong with using a measuring tape as a starting point, but the actual bra has to be fitted because they vary so much even within brands.

Bravissimo have a great reputation. Also Debenhams fit the bra properly and stock Freya, Fantasie etc.

Even in Bravissimo there's a difference in fit. It depends on the brand and shape of the bra.

Yup, there's differences within brands too. I wear a 36DD in a Freya Deco, but in another style that's supposed to be a fancier version of the Deco I'm a totally different size. A good fitter will fit you in the actual bra that is best for you rather than just send you off with a size just based on a measurement. I do wish manufacturers would standardise more efficiently!

Excellent. Thanks for the tips, ladies. I'll be heading to Debenhams for my first bra fitting next week! I reckon I'm a 36/38D, it'll be interesting to find out how (in)accurate I am... Thanks again x

OH yes- this is the other problem. Once you've been fitted you can't just assume that size will fit you in every brand. You have to learn your size for every brand, same as you do for dress sizes.
