Hi guys,

Just been given a Sony E-Reader by my brother and have not got a clue how to download books onto it?? Can I do it from my laptop and if so what do I need???

Can I get free books and/or where is the cheapest and best place to buy the books?

Thanks

Just google free epub books, epub is a format used by Sony readers. It will also read PDF files, so you can use those as well. Basicaly you just copy the files from computer to the reader connected with an USB cable.

If you want to buy the books, you need to get your Adobe Id, download and install Adobe Digital Editions. It will configure both your computer and reader for DRM protected books. Then when you buy a book you use your Adobe Id and get a download link, which you use to download the book, which you then copy to the reader. DRM protection means the book is encrypted and is unreadable if your reader Adobe id and the id with which the book was encrypted do not match. It may sound complicated, but you just need to go through this once or twice and it will become a routine.

If you come across a free book in a format your reader can't use, have a look at a free programme called Calibre, it will convert between most book formats. It can also manage your ebook library. The programme provided by Sony used to be pretty awful, I do not know if that changed since.

What model of a reader do you have? The new one PRS-T1 looks very nice.

It's Sony's first touchscreen model I think, the screen has a lot of reflection, but you can minimise that if you hold it in certain angle. Maybe your brother can help you to set it up. Download Digital Editions, it should help you get the Adobe Id, then connect the reader, it will set it up and you can start buying the books. But even without it you can read the free books. Enjoy your reader, it made me start reading more again. I thought I did not have time for it, but with a reader that can hold hundreds of book and is small and light and that you can take with you anywhere there's no excuse not to read

To assist in transfering from pc to sony have a look at calibre, its a free down load & fairly simple to use. Works very well

I have the Sony Library program and it is crap. Do you know if both can coexist as I don't particularly want to uninstall the Library? (It's too much hassle and the Sony Library does work albeit in it's own crappy way).
