So while the private sector where doing everything in their power to become efficient and stay afloat, Gordon Brown and Balls decided that any people who got made redundant, would be put into Public Sector work. I agree with most of that. The 13 years of Labour were a disappointment but you can't just blame the government and absolve the irresponsibility of the financial institutions can you? Government borrowing was rising but not dramatically and it only reached a crisis point when RBS and Lloyds needed rescuing. Most of our current problems began at that moment in my opinion. Private debt - credit cards particularly - was rising all through the decade but it was the banks and financial institutions who were as responsible for that as the public. It was the institutions who increased card limits for and lent money to those not in a position to be able to afford to repay those monies.

There is an old saying, lose the battle win the war. Well Germany lost the war but finally won the battle. Top Dog of Europe. All in peacetime. Lovely thing isn't it, peace!

yeah, but we have more biscuit production. That is the indication of military strength.

Still, with your logic we would be stronger than most countries as we have nukes.

I'm gonna take a guess and say you're not really good at discussing points, or you're on a windup.

how strange. I didn't realise they had won anything. What stops the other countries leaving if the public decide on it? From what I see, if any country had a UKIP like party, like ourselves, we just vote for that and voila, we're out.

I think you're too focused on the war myself. Perhaps a bit of deep breathing and thinking the UK isn't some empire building country any more would help you.

I suggest you look at all the statistics about the military power of the UK.

Where is that link I asked for in posting number 26 to this thread? Could you please provide a source for the figures you gave in posting 12 to this thread?

The sooner we quit the EU the better. The Germans will follow us out of it one day despite what their increasingly unpopular pro-EU ruling 'elite' say in defence of the EU and ailing euro now.

who knows. I just think it's odd when people think Germany has 'won'.

Damn those hard working Germans for working so hard and spending billions on those who don't work quite so hard. It must be great being the 'winner' that they are.

I would have thought Greece have won. They're the ones who every other country wants to pour billions into for no other reason than they need it.

With the partial exception of the UK, the EU has broad popular support across Europe. Even countries hit hard by the present crisis value the EU and with to retain the euro as their currency. The notion that only the elites support the EU is a myth.

The Germans are not going to pour money into Greece to keep her in the euro forever.

nope, they won't. Does that mean they have lost then?

I'm saying lost, as it was the other poster who stipulated germany has somehow won. Will they lose against Greece, if greece leave the Euro.

I did not write that "only the elites support the EU" - although the highest level of support for the EU is among those political 'elites'.

An opinion poll commissioned by the EU found that the EU is far from popular in a number of continental EU nations.

The EU is - quite understandably - extremely unpopular in the UK as recent opinion polls have again confirmed.

The fewer euro-using nations Germany is forced to help economically the better for Germany. But what is best for all for Germany (on this subject) is no euro at all. She doesn't need it and never did. Neither does any other country.

Didn't Churchill also share Heath's wish for a unified Europe? Both right in this instance I think (if not on much else )

No. The Late Sir Winston Churchill quite rightly delivered a famous speech in which he said that the UK should have no part in an EU Superstate.

Which isn't what Heath wanted either I expect, and not what we have now either

Do you have a link to Churchill's speech? I'm sure he believed in union of some kind.

The Late Sir Winston Churchill was referring to a possible union of some kind involving Germany and France - not the UK. Of the UK and the EU Superstate ambition of europhiles he said "We have our own dream and our own task. We are with europe, but not of it. We are linked, but not comprised. We are interested and associated, but not absorbed."
