Marcus Overrated?
P Barnard
21-11-2011
Am I the only person on DS who is in completely mistified by the support for Marcus. The guy can sing, he seems a nice genuine guy, but with his style being 50's and 60's songs who is seriously going to buy his records if he wins?

I can understand why younger woman would go for a good looking young man, and why older woman would like the songs, but where is the male vote coming from?

I would love to know the voting figures to see if he really does have as much support as people think!

Bruno Mars is the biggest-selling global male artist at the moment and, if you listen to his album, it has a very retro style.

I'm a guy and I vote for Marcus because he's the only contestant who has been consistent every single week. I enjoy his performances, his vocals are great but underrated and he's likeable (just like Olly Murs was - and he managed to carve out a successful music career).

I'm certainly going to buy his records if he wins - I think he's brilliant. He obviously has "as much support as people think" as he hasn't been in the bottom 2.

The number of straight males who vote on these type of shows is almost insignificant.

He's a great singer, it annoys me Gary's trying to turn him into Olly Murs.. He doesn't need to put on a big show every week complete with a million dancers, let him sing a ballad one week at least.

Marcus has a better voice than the songs he has been given and the style he is singing in. He is almost like a caricature of a singer from 50 years ago. I think he has more to offer but I wonder if he will get to show it. Gary seems to want him to show no personality or depth.

Unless they are looking to hang Marcus to make way for Princess Amelia, I get the impression that Gary is timing it right with Marcus and that he will pull out the killer performance when the going gets tough.

Um Marcus is definitely not overrated on this forum lol He has picked up quite a bit of dislike over the last few weeks. DS seems to rate Amelia and Little Mix over Marcus.

Bear in mind Alexandra's "moment" was with 'Listen' in week 8.

We know Marcus is doing a ballad next week (especially with Craig out of the picture) so hopefully...

.
Marcus is overrated and overpromoted in my opinion.

We all have different opinions, nothing wrong with that.

I like him, like his voice but hate what Gary is doing to him.
Marcus looked like a camp cabaret act in that outfit....

[quote=Stube;54752139]Bear in mind Alexandra's "moment" was with 'Listen' in week 8.

Alexandra copied other singers styles till Simon told her to just be herself. A week later her turning point came when she sang Candyman in Big Band Week. She was terrific.

Then she had a brilliant duet with Beyonce, one of the best X Factor moments of all the X Factors, then the clincher was her version of Hallelujah, which was the fastest-selling download ever across Europe ...

i don't think marcus is half as capable, vocally as alexandra - or leona lewis. he's got a solid voice...but not a wow, IMO

however, i think he's a fun all round entertainer, has stage presence and has a likeable personality.

i don't think it's worth comparing him with bruno mars. did any of you watch "runaway baby"? WOW! i think what scott mills said on xtra factor was pretty spot on...

Yes, yes you are the only person mystified by the support for Marcus.

God, I hate articles like these. Why can't people accept that there is such thing as an OPINION and different people have them. You might not like Marcus, that's your opinion. Don't try to shove it down our throats. I don't like Janet's voice. You don't see me creating anti-Janet articles just for the hell of it.

I much prefer Marcus' voice to either of those two. He has a voice quality that appeals to me more than theirs - just taste, I suppose.

In saying that, I think Marcus is not being allowed to live up to the potential he showed prior to the live shows - there's too many up-tempo songs of late. He needs to be allowed to do something that will show light and shade.

It seems they have him pegged in the style of Little Richard while doing a bit of the Cat from Red Dwarf - this, I like, but I'm still not sure it's right for Marcus?

I really like Marcus and rather than being overrated - I think he's just over-hyped and I don't think that bodes well at all. Not with the XF. Gawd help him if he wins.

actually, i could agree with you there about his vox. i'm more inclined to enjoy a performance that sticks to "the tune" than vocal histrionics. altho if he's going to cover stevie wonder or someone who sings in that style, then he's not going to have the chops to pull it off (or will have to change the arrangement).

good luck to marcus, i hope he makes it to the final and carves a nice little career out of it.

I actually would feel sorry for him of he won... obviously would be a major flop. I'd say he'll end up doing musicals or something.
