Re Text Santa, it's also inconceivable that nearly 12m switched ITV off the minute the TXF credits rolled. You'd think Text Santa started with something like 7m or more, at the very least. So goodness knows what it ended with if it averaged less than 4m - and if several million switched off, they are unlikely to come back on Xmas Eve, I should have thought.

My apologies to those who expressed incredulity when I suggested Text Santa would get about 3 million - it was actually 3.9 million.I reserve the right to invoke 3% either way A huge Xmas turkey for ITV as it seems many people didn't understand what the programme was about (including the presenters by the look of it)

Charles Sale talking rubbish again then....

Seems it was ITV who held the aces on the Euro picks rather than the BBC, and will presumably have an England semi final exclusively live - a fair contender for biggest audience of 2012 should we progress that far (an unlikely England final would be shared, of course, splitting the audience).

The BBC has both semi finals exclusively.

Text Santa should Text Viewers! I was expecting at least 6m. The opening was very good though. I do wonder if people tuned out across the hour?

Gosh! How did they manage that then?

How have we gone from ITV insiders talking up the prospect of them having exclusive coverage of the whole tournament to the BBC having sole coverage of a potential England QF AND SF as well as one of the group games?

Looks like the Beeb have snaffled some of the choice group fixtures there as well - granted, ITV have ROI's 1st two games including Spain, and potentially 2 out of 3 of England's matches, including the opener and crunch 3rd tie/Rooney return, should we flop again.

Rating of the day:

Japan Tsunami: Caught on Camera was watched by 1.84m (6.2%) on Channel 4 from 8.15pm (+1: 401k/1.6%).

Well done Channel 4. Very nice opposite TXF final. It seems it was largely business as usual for the other terrestrials whilst it was on!

DS figures exclude Channel 5+1 hence being lower than the ones I posted.

It was my TXF-alternative viewing, and I thought it was a good, if difficult at times, watch. I expected it to do well and help dent TXF a little. I hoped it might have cleared 2m tbh.

Sure it would have rated much better than that - possibly double that number - had it aired in a less competitive slot.

I suspect you're right. What is so extraordinary about that rating though is:

1) it had the worst possible lead-in from a Conservative party broadcast and 4thought.tv;
2) the start time did not share a junction with ANY other major channel;
3) C4 were more interested in what was going on on the other side in their promotional activities (i.e. Black Mirror "9.30 after The X Factor final.")

It's encouraging that good documentaries can pull in such numbers even when seemingly everything is against them.

Any rating available for last night's Countryfile?

I'm not surprised at the txt santa rating.
Come on ITV viewers are never going to warm to Christine "Millionairess" Bleakley.
They should rename it txt sack bleakley. I'm sure that the milllions raised by the txt and the money saved by ITV on her contract will be worth it.. ITV obvioulsy don't like their viewers very much if they subject them to a dose of pre xmas bleakley, It's like watching someone drowning live!

ITV1 seems to have more group games than BBC1, so I guess no semi final on ITV1 was the pay-off. ITV1 will have 11 group games: 6 in primetime and 5 at 5pm. BBC1 will have 9 group games: 6 in primetime and 3 at 5pm.

I guess you could say that the two extra 5pm matches is equivalent to one primetime semi final? If England do well in the tournament and progress far though, it'll end up being a better deal for the BBC. I suppose ITV wanted more of the guaranteed group games (crucially two England and two ROI games) so that they could sell ad spots for those games months in advance.

What will be the Advertising revenue for X Factor next year. Someone said it will be way down from this year?

Ad spots sold early will probably be sold about 15% lower than this year's series. Late money will come in too though, and that will be dependent on how the series is doing then.
