Interesting.
Am I right in saying that this just leaves The Masters and the MOTD highlights as the other big contracts that the BBC have yet to tie up? The Premier League rights should be auctioned in the Spring, and presumably they will put up quite a fight to keep the MOTD highlights. The Masters have yet to announce a new deal with the BBC/Sky, last years sharing arrangement was only a one year deal. So effectively so far, despite the cuts, the only major sporting contract that the BBC have 'given up' is F1? And obviously they will still be showing half the races live. Otherwise, the DQF cuts have basically cost them exclusivity on the F1, the live Football League stuff, plus the World Athletics, the French Open tennis and a few of the smaller darts and snooker tournaments. I think in the scheme of things, they'll be relatively satisfied. I'd wager that the F1 and the World Athletics are the only ones that cause real hurt. Quote:
If you're going to do that, though, you may as well just put Norton on the night before, because it won't seem very special there. They don't have to bother with New Year Live, they could slot the bongs and fireworks in Norton if that began around 11.30, it wouldn't mean Norton has to be live. They've already cut down New Year Live from the hour or so it got about five years ago to just 25 minutes last year.

ITV press office updated last year at this time. They had Benidorm on Christmas day in the preliminary.
That Millionaire date is probably correct though as the show is live so they'll probably have already confirmed that date. As for losing a Corrie, they did the same thing on the Monday before Christmas last year with Come Rain Come Shine airing at 8:30pm, so that's probably going to happen. |

Christmas on Channel 5: Programme Highlights 2011
Ben Hur (1-2/2)
The epic and timeless tale of betrayal, conviction, faith and redemption is lavishly brought to life in this feature length drama. This re-telling of the perennially popular story features an all-star cast and exhilarating action set-pieces. Ben Hur is a gut-wrenching, action-packed drama about the struggle between the Roman Empire and its occupied territory, Judea. Two lifelong friends, Ben Hur (Joseph Morgan, ‘Silent Witness’, ‘Doc Martin’) and Messala (Stephen Campbell Moore, ‘The History Boys’), are caught in a moment of history that puts them on opposite sides of a war for Judea’s national identity – and tests their characters to the limit. The Gadget Show: Winter Special The show that puts the latest technology to the test continues on Channel 5. This week is a Winter Special of the programme. Jon, Pollyanna and Ortis head into an environmental test laboratory to test the latest technical winter clothing. Monitored by a team of physiological experts, they get shut inside the ‘cold room’ and experience a continual drop of temperature from zero to minus 30 degrees. Who has the warmest clothes and who can bear being in the chamber the longest? World’s Strongest Man 2011 The World’s Strongest Man has been entertaining Christmas audiences for 33 years. It is back on Channel 5 bigger and better than ever, as a host of new scientific innovations bring the incredible strains suffered by these behemoths into sharp focus. Presented by James Richardson and Caroline Pearce, Channel 5 brings you all the action from the event. Strength tests include the Farmer’s Walk, Log Lift, Atlas Stones and Ice Cream Machine Deadlift. ‘Carry On’ Night ‘Carry On’ legend Barbara Windsor takes over Channel 5 for an evening to introduce a selection of programmes that will raise a few eyebrows and tickle the funny bones. From 1958’s Carry On Sergeant until Carry On Emmannuelle in 1978 (with a brief return for Carry On Columbus in 1992) the saucy comedy of the Carry On films was ubiquitous with British film and television. Tonight, Channel 5 celebrates the old-school farce, fabulousness and frolics that epitomised mainstream comedy in the 1960s and 70s. Mistletoe and Crime Night Channel 5 brings you an evening of festive themed thrills and spills, courtesy of a selection of specially picked episodes from your favourite US crime dramas. Featuring CSI:NY, NCIS and The Mentalist. Britain’s Favourite Christmas Songs Channel 5 unwraps the songs that put the cheer in festive period. Which songs really break the ice at Christmas? The Jackson 5’s ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’, Greg Lake’s ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’ or Jona Lewie’s ‘Stop the Cavalry’ are on many lists. ‘Do They Know it’s Christmas’ might still ring true, but has Mud’s ‘Lonely this Christmas’ passed its sell-by date? Where would we be without The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s ‘Fairytale of New York’ or the Waitresses’ ‘Christmas Wrapping’. Channel 5 unwraps the greatest gifts that musicians have given to us for the Christmases past and present. TV’s 50 Greatest Magic Tricks Channel 5 presents this countdown of the greatest TV magic tricks of all time – from the astonishing set pieces of Penn and Teller, to the mindbending of Derren Brown, to the street magic of David Blaine, be prepared to be amazed and mystified. With contributions from magic’s greatest stars including Paul Daniels and Debbie Magee, new magician wonderkid Dynamo, Penn and Teller, and magic fans Joe Pasquale, Dick and Dom, and Stephen Mulhern. Most Shocking Celebrity Moments of 2011 This special programme takes a light-hearted look at the 50 most outrageous occurrences in the world of the rich and famous this year. As the 50 calamitous events in this chart illustrate, 2011 has been a vintage year in the world of celebrity. In the 12 months since January, there have been plenty of shocking moments to keep the tabloids full to the brim. With contributions from the celebrity winners and losers themselves, as well as an eclectic panel of commentators and experts, this show condenses the most salacious gossip of 2011. Andre Rieu’s Christmas Spectacular The iconic Dutch violinist, conductor and founder of the Johann Strauss Orchestra brings a slice of classical music to the table this Christmas. Renowned for his populist spectacles, Rieu has filled a plethora of stadiums around the world with his mix of classical and traditional songs. Movie Premiere: Step Brothers (2008) Comedy. Two spoilt middle-aged men who still live at home become step brothers when their parents marry. Forced to share a bedroom and look for jobs together, the pair eventually forge a friendship. But can the family’s domestic situation ever be harmonious? Milkshake! Peppa Pig Oink! ‘Peppa Pig’ is back for a brand-new series of these popular, animated piggy tales. Small children adore Peppa Pig, she’s so cute and cheeky and funny. She’s like a little girl in many ways, including being a bit bossy to her younger brother George. Source: Channel 5 Press. |

I imagine there will be some mightily pissed off advertiser clients then, who wanted to use DA for their final Christmas sales push. Will cost ITV a fortune, simply to use their biggest drama to rain on BBC1's Christmas.
Should open up Sunday 18th nicely for BBC1.... If they want to, there are still spots available for the X Factor final.

It doesn't need wit though. The whole point of The Voice is that its supposed to be about the voices of the contestants. This is a show that will live or die by the quality of the talent on the show not the quality or style of the presenters.

That would have been inspired, he could have done the whole droll sense of humour, would have been a nice angle. In saying all that I've never seen the show nor do I know the format, but I find Yates SO irritating on the festival shows he does over the Summer.

Yes, I think they've almost finished cutting their cloth now. As you say, in terms of annual events, the last two big ones are MOTD and The Masters - and I would be surprised to see them lose either of those. There does remain some big non-annual events on the loose though - still no word on Euro 2012 or the Olympics after 2012. But again, I guess the odds would be that the BBC retain the status quo there. It would certainly be massive news if they lost them - and a catastrophe for the Sport department, in my humble opinion.

I think in the scheme of things, they'll be relatively satisfied. I'd wager that the F1 and the World Athletics are the only ones that cause real hurt. They could do this. It depends what's happening in London. I don't know, but I had assumed that the New Year celebrations might be a bit more extensive than usual because of the Olympics. I'd be surprised if the London Organising Committee weren't taking ownership of the event to launch their 'Cultural Olympiad' and the like. Which the BBC might find themselves somewhat duty bound to cover. |

However I do think the Masters is at significant risk - if I was laying odds I would say maybe a 33% chance of BBC losing its rights. Whilst it is an iconic event, it is on BBC2, the ratings aren't massive and in addition to the rights cost it must cost quite a bit to send a full team out to Augusta for just two evenings of live coverage (+ two highlights shows). Sky also has some financial leverage - it could threaten to pull out completely if it doesn't get exclusive live coverage of the whole event (costing Augusta approx £10m per year as BBC certainly isn't going to be able to pay much more). I doubt Sky would be that aggressive so soon but it's possible. It's also worth noting that the list of minor rights lost could still get longer - eg Rugby League Challenge Cup / Internationals (expired 2011) and Superbowl (expires Feb 2012) could be possibilities. |

US Ratings Tuesday November 22
The Fall finale of Dancing with the Stars led ABC to a Tuesday night victory and produced some uptick for the 8PM comedies it was however down 23% year-on-year and the lowest Fall finale in the shows history. Cancelled comedy Man Up was up 12% at 8:30 but still couldn’t crack a 2 helpfully explaining why it’s been cancelled. Meanwhile The X Factor continued its bounce around Fox’s schedule with another Tuesday night performance show. It logged the shows lowest performance rating to date although it led Fox to an easy victory in the 18-34 demo (2.7). Over on CBS it was a night of season lows with NCIS down 13% (but still winning the 8PM hour), NCIS: LA down 12% and Unforgettable dropping 8% to a series low. All things considered NBC held up relatively well with Biggest Loser and Parenthood down just 5% week-on-week. Things could have been much worse for them. And the utterly confusing CW scheduling continues with a repeat of Hart of Dixie in Ringer’s Tuesday 9PM slot (after Ringer has spent the entire season airing repeats on every other night of the week). ABC 8PM: Last Man Standing – 2.7 [9.33] 8:30PM: Man Up! – 1.9 [6.79] 9PM: Dancing with the Stars – 4.1 [19.45] CBS 8PM: NCIS – 3.5 [18.45] 9PM: NCIS: LA – 3.0 [14.03] 10PM: Unforgettable – 2.2 [10.33] Fox 8PM: The X Factor – 3.2 [9.33] NBC 8PM: Biggest Loser – 2.0 [5.57] 10PM: Parenthood – 1.9 [4.54] The CW 8PM: 90210 – 0.6 [1.26] 9PM: Hart of Dixie [r] – 0.4 [0.94] |

I'm really happy with the lineup. Lots of specials and stuff which will do well, especially Carry On night. Quote:
That's an interesting decision. Although I suppose it wouldn't have made a whole lot of sense to start it back up for a few weeks and then stop it for Christmas and then start it back up again in the new year.

Yes, I'd be amazed if BBC lost MOTD or the Olympics and despite some rumours it seems pretty unlikely they will lose Euro 2012 either.

As for the Challenge Cup and the Superbowl, I'm not sure how much they cost, and you'd think both would want terrestrial exposure. I think the Superbowl costs next to nothing, doesn't it, the NFL just want the exposure. |

But there are also production costs to consider and the thing about clearing out a lot of the non high profile stuff is that I would have thought it gives an opportunity to reduce some of the ongoing behind the scenes costs of the sports department. Whilst most of the sports rights lost are of moderate or minor importance they add up to a pretty high volume of content so there may be scope for a general slimming down. |

So once more ITV won't show any live rugby of any importance until the next World Cup. I know they've got their ITV4 highlights shows but for the casual fans that doesn't mean much. We always get comments about how well ITV do the World Cup and how well it does for them commercially, yet it never leads to anything.
As for the Six Nations - great it's remained free to air, but the BBC need to completely refresh their punditary panel - it's got very tiresome in the last couple of years and one of the best things about ITV having the World Cup is we see it from a different perspective. The Voice is still slated for Spring then - so I guess Let's Dance will probably return beforehand then. |

Digiguide has had a update, not sure how correct it is.
for example, I would be AMAZED if BBC 3 air new episodes of American Dad on Christmas Day. Week 51 is pretty much a non event, my only question mark is, what is the nature of the HIGNFY Christmas Special. oh and Sports Personality is on 22nd |
