If ITV1 leave the 7pm hour free (well, Family Fortunes), they're just asking BBC One to create havoc:
6.00 Doctor Who 7.00 EastEnders 7.30 Strictly Come Dancing 8.30 The Gruffalo's Child 9.00 EastEnders Meaning Coronation Street would have to start halfway through Strictly and EastEnders would compete with Downton (although they're probably going to be resigned to that). But I think they'll be determined to block off the 7pm hour myself; airing Emmerdale there with Coronation Street at 8, and then Downton at 9. For me, this still creates problems though as the BBC can go with: 6.00 EastEnders 6.30 Doctor Who 7.30 Strictly Come Dancing 8.30 The Gruffalo's Child 9.00 EastEnders The BBC's biggest weakness in the 9pm slot, and that's where they'll want EastEnders IMO. So ITV1 need to weaken it as much as possible...the easiest way to do this is to start Downton at 8.30pm with the shows running off the half hour before it. That way, unless they willingly clash, EastEnders will either have to start at half past 8 or at 9; halfway through Downton. I think if ITV1 do this, BBC One will simply alter their schedules to start on the half hour themselves and combine EastEnders as the one episode: 6.30 Doctor Who 7.30 Strictly Come Dancing 8.30 EastEnders 9.30 The Royal Bodyguard Or they could risk that The Royal Bodyguard would retain an EastEnders audience at nine and go with: 6.00 EastEnders 6.30 Doctor Who 7.30 Strictly Come Dancing 8.30 EastEnders 9.00 The Royal Bodyguard 9.30 Absolutely Fabulous But that would just result in ITV1 shifting their schedule back 30 minutes. |

Joking aside, I can't think of anything less conducive to a family sitting round the telly together on Xmas Night than Downton Abbey.
The 3 big soaps, Strictly, Dr Who, Family Fortunes even - all good clean fun, booze in hand, nibbles in the other. But Downton? I really can't figure out ITV's logic, other than potential wrecking tactics. |

7:00pm is too early and i hope the BEEB stick to their guns, If it clashes with Corrie than so be it because i think the BBC would be on to a winner anyway. |

A bit off topic, but seeing as it might be BBC1's prime Boxing Day offering, I've currently got the John Bishop repeat on. The show is much better in this extended 45 minute form. More comedy, more gags, and less talking heads.
Why the blazers didn't they air them like this in the first place?

There won't be wholesale changes now at this late stage.
I think the final schedules will be as follows: BBC1 6.0 Gruffalo 6.30 DW 7.30 EE 8.00 SCD 9.00 EE 9.30 Royal Bodyguard 10.00 AbFab 10.30 Comedy Roadshow 11.30 News ITV1 6.00 EmFm 7.00 ASFF 8.00 Coro 9.00 DA 11.05 News I would imagine the 7.30 EE will win the day in both overnights and officials. Then Doctor Who, then Downton. That could change if ITV do push EmFm up against Coro (it's bizarre that they seemingly aren't doing), in which I'd expect BBC1 to air EE at 6.30 and DW at 7. Finally, can we now assume that the much anticipated festive treats The One Jasper Carrott/Lenny Henry/Griff Rhys Jones have now been strangely ditched from the Christmas schedule - despite featuring on the BBC's wk 51/52 press pack barely a week ago, and Henry featuring on the BBC's Christmas trailer? ![]() Seemingly not then! 6.00 Dr Who 7.00 Eastenders 7.30 Gruffalo 8.00 ....as above..... ![]() Remember: 1) Gruffalo two Christmases ago had 8.8m in the overnights nearly 1m more than Corrie, ITV1's highest rating. 2) The last Wallace & Grommitt went out on Xmas Day at 8.30pm ![]() And for The One.... How about the New Year weekend? New Year's Eve, New Year's Day (at 10.30pm after Sherlock) and New Year Bank Holiday. |

Given that Rowan Atkinson would never do it unless paid a lot of money, it probably won't happen.

So tomorrow's D-Day in the Christmas schedules day - the biggest day in a scheduler's year! The BBC1 team have got a lot of work to do to make sure they make the best of the good line-up of programmes. Boxing Day needs attention, but difficult to know exactly what to do with Corrie at 9.
They need to improve on what they've got though and not cave in to the ITV soaps - they should remember they're far weaker than they've ever been. Christmas Day needs lots of work too, be interesting to see how the final schedules pan out. Just hope ITV don't drop a nasty surprise like they sometimes do - I remember a few years ago they suddenly moved all Corrie's for the fortnight from 7.30 to 8.30 and threw the BBC schedules into chaos. If ITV win, it will be a much needed kick start for BBC1. |

In a way, ITV winning the ratings over BBC1 this year would lead to the BBC strengthening 2012's schedules. ITV haven't beaten BBC1 since 1984 when they premiered "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Christmas shouldn't be about experimenting with new comedy series but is a time for big specials of special shows! Yes they have Doctor Who on Christmas night and Strictly, but why not be really bold and try something different?
If ITV win, it will be a much needed kick start for BBC1. Back to this year, Im pleased to see The Royal Bodyguard is probably on Christmas Day. Scheduling of Lapland and The Borrowers looks a bit odd but would people prefer the Beeb to run filler against every ITV soap episode or stop broadcasting after 10pm? They both might be total stinkers too. I will reserve overall judgment for when schedules are confirmed (tomorrow?) before throwing my toys out of the pram after picking them up of the floor where RobbieSykes threw them out earlier.

Next year will most probably have The Royle Family back at 9pm. Miranda should have really taken off on BBC1 and a Christmas special should really be big business. Mrs Brown's Boys could become a another big comedy hit for BBC1 if scheduled decently and then the options are looking very bright.
A Miranda/EE/Royle Family/Mrs Brown's Boys lineup would work well. Mrs Brown already has a decent slot on Boxing Day although it would have worked just as well at 10.30 on Christmas Day. |

While many on this thread are understandably pushing the prospect of The Royal Bodyguard airing on Christmas Day... what if... it's crap?
This could be Life of Riley style, abysmal BBC1 comedy. Coupling that with Ab Fab, which from the one clip we have seen so far appears to be devoid of laughs, typical of the recent revivals that show has had, and it's looking like a pretty dismal Christmas night for BBC1... I think the best they can go for is... 9.00 EastEnders 10.00 Ab Fab 10.30 Mrs Browns Boys They'll win against Downton Abbey and keep the tradition of reviving a comedy on Christmas Day, while providing something with a few actual laughs in it at the end. |

Unofficially Wikipedia shows a timeshifted rating of 12.42m for the final Downton Abbey 6th November episode - which would bump it above Strictly Come Dancing. |

I wouldn't put it past them. Tomorrow is the day of the year when we often see ITV at its worst.
![]() If you and ronant are so confident that BBC1 has the best programmes, then a massive ratings win should be a slam dunk. But I sense a niggling doubt that maybe some of these shows might only win by default, so you are keen to ensure that ITV dont make any effort. Then you can both celebrate the BBCs ratings and berate ITV for not caring about Christmas. |

Nothing special for that show considering all the coverage it got in the run up.
The media keep getting behind these shows in a big way but so far the only one to really take off is TOWIE. |
