If ITV1 leave the 7pm hour free (well, Family Fortunes), they're just asking BBC One to create havoc:

Meaning Coronation Street would have to start halfway through Strictly and EastEnders would compete with Downton (although they're probably going to be resigned to that). But I think they'll be determined to block off the 7pm hour myself; airing Emmerdale there with Coronation Street at 8, and then Downton at 9. For me, this still creates problems though as the BBC can go with:

8.30 The Gruffalo's Child

The BBC's biggest weakness in the 9pm slot, and that's where they'll want EastEnders IMO. That way, unless they willingly clash, EastEnders will either have to start at half past 8 or at 9; halfway through Downton. I think if ITV1 do this, BBC One will simply alter their schedules to start on the half hour themselves and combine EastEnders as the one episode:

Joking aside, I can't think of anything less conducive to a family sitting round the telly together on Xmas Night than Downton Abbey.

I don't think the BBC would go for that TBH. They would rather the split episodes or the 8:00pm Hour.
7:00pm is too early and i hope the BEEB stick to their guns,
If it clashes with Corrie than so be it because i think the BBC would be on to a winner anyway.

I can't understand it either. Not the type of programe you'd watch at 9:00pm on xmas night i don't think. 2 hours must be too long after all that food and drink people would likely want to watch some comedy.

A bit off topic, but seeing as it might be BBC1's prime Boxing Day offering, I've currently got the John Bishop repeat on. The show is much better in this extended 45 minute form. More comedy, more gags, and less talking heads.

Remember:
1) Gruffalo two Christmases ago had 8.8m in the overnights nearly 1m more than Corrie, ITV1's highest rating.
2) The last Wallace & Grommitt went out on Xmas Day at 8.30pm
And for The One.... How about the New Year weekend? New Year's Eve, New Year's Day (at 10.30pm after Sherlock) and New Year Bank Holiday.

Obviously the idea is to give EastEnders an easy ride at 7 and weaken the 9 o'clock hour in the process. If they fall for it they deserve to be beaten in the ratings.

Given that Rowan Atkinson would never do it unless paid a lot of money, it probably won't happen.
I think they should swap Mrs Brown's Boys and John Bishop around with MBB at 9 and John Bishop at 9.30pm, The previous scheduling putting on at 11pm on Christmas Day was terrible.

Christmas shouldn't be about experimenting with new comedy series but is a time for big specials of special shows! Yes they have Doctor Who on Christmas night and Strictly, but why not be really bold and try something different?
If ITV win, it will be a much needed kick start for BBC1.

Next year will most probably have The Royle Family back at 9pm. Miranda should have really taken off on BBC1 and a Christmas special should really be big business. Mrs Brown's Boys could become a another big comedy hit for BBC1 if scheduled decently and then the options are looking very bright.
Back to this year, Im pleased to see The Royal Bodyguard is probably on Christmas Day. Scheduling of Lapland and The Borrowers looks a bit odd but would people prefer the Beeb to run filler against every ITV soap episode or stop broadcasting after 10pm? They both might be total stinkers too.
I will reserve overall judgment for when schedules are confirmed (tomorrow?) before throwing my toys out of the pram after picking them up of the floor where RobbieSykes threw them out earlier.

I think they should try and bring back Men Behaving Badly, think Caroline Quentin is the only one which is preventing any sort of reunion episode.
A Miranda/EE/Royle Family/Mrs Brown's Boys lineup would work well. Mrs Brown already has a decent slot on Boxing Day although it would have worked just as well at 10.30 on Christmas Day.
While many on this thread are understandably pushing the prospect of The Royal Bodyguard airing on Christmas Day... what if... it's crap?

Will we see another six shows rating 10m in the next 33 days? Unofficially Wikipedia shows a timeshifted rating of 12.42m for the final Downton Abbey 6th November episode - which would bump it above Strictly Come Dancing.

If you and ronant are so confident that BBC1 has the best programmes, then a massive ratings win should be a slam dunk. But I sense a niggling doubt that maybe some of these shows might only win by default, so you are keen to ensure that ITV dont make any effort. Then you can both celebrate the BBCs ratings and berate ITV for not caring about Christmas.
