"ITV bosses knew they had Downton up their sleeve as a secret weapon"
Yes, Daily Mirror - we were all stunned to see a 2 hour special of Downton Abbey show up in ITV's festive schedules today. ![]() Just how did they keep it so quiet and "up their sleeve", as you put it... |

I'd be amazed if Toy Story 3 doesn't get the late-afternoon Christmas Day slot. That's a big ratings banker right there I would have thought. Has anyone been able to work out if the BBC are saving Up for New Years Day or holding it back for Christmas next year?
Alice in Wonderland will likely get a primetime slot on either Christmas Eve or Boxing Day, I liked it but it got a mixed reception from critics. |

I appreciate B.A.R.B. offers free ratings data, and I am sure many of us are very grateful - yet almost every evening at midnight it shuts down, maybe they have heaps of data to upload for subscribers, but it just does not load............. a slight annoyance......
Regarding Xmas Day 2011 ratings........... I estimate the following Eastenders 9.1m Dr Who 8.9m Strictly Come Dancing 9.5m Coronation Street 8.9m Downton Abbey 9.0m |

BARB back online, hurrah! Just looking at Xmas Day 2005 (also on a Sunday.) Here are the top 10 shows for that day.
Sunday Officials, December 25th 2005 1 EASTENDERS (SUN 2104) 10.60m 2 DOCTOR WHO (SUN 1902) 9.84m 3 CORONATION STREET (SUN 1959) 9.81m 4 THE TWO RONNIES CHRISTMAS SKETCHBOOK (SUN 2203) 7.87m 5 FILM: SHREK (SUN 1509) 6.74m 6 FILM: TOY STORY II (SUN 1632) 6.57m 7 WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? (SUN 1903) 6.55m 8 EMMERDALE (SUN 1801) 6.24m (rated as high as 9.40m that same week) 9 MY FAMILY (SUN 1759) 5.85m 10 THE GREEN GREEN GRASS (SUN 2002) 4.59m A few of those ratings are quite average or below, and these are 7 day timeshifts - imagine how much lower the overnights were (VCRs were still all the rage in 2005, dvd recorders less so.) Hopefully 2011 ratings will better those somewhat, the top 3 shows did rate well, if Ab Fab / MM can match that Two Ronnies Sketchbook rating in the 10pm hour, BBC1 will be well pleased. |

I love how certain people have questioned whether or not DA is suitable for Christmas Day... clearly British people have warped taste in festive programming when Eastenders is the annual highlight! I'm in two minds about DA. On one hand, I think it's good that ITV are making an effort - Christmas Day is a big day for UK TV and it does seem that the people most rattled by it are the same ones who take glee in BBC1's annual victories and ITV1's limp efforts. I guess it could be beneficial in terms of the brand and reputation. But realistically, I can't see it doing particularly well. And it might just end up providing tabloid writers with something bigger to beat them with (e.g: Downton Abbey finished 6th on Christmas Day). It seems a bit like the programming people wishing they were in a BBC world while the accountants pull their hair out. Whenever they've made any kind of effort in recent years, people have said on boxing day that they really shouldn't bother. Perhaps this is the year that will make that a reality? If the biggest drama series in the UK can't turn it around then there's obviously nothing they can do. Quote:

Up has only just premiered on Sky Movies, it won't be on the BBC at New Year.
And I doubt Toy Story 3 will get an airing next year. It's a 2010 release, and Ratatouille is a 2007 release only getting an airing this year. Monsters vs. Aliens - April 2009 Up - October 2009 If the BBC can't air Up this time around it would suggest films released in the first half of 2010 will be available for the Christmas schedule next year which would leave Toy Story 3 (July release) potentially going either way. |

How To Train Your Dragon was also a 2010 release. As were both Shrek 4 and Alice in Wonderland. Monsters vs. Aliens (which airs on Christmas Day this year) was a 2009 release. The year alone probably isn't the greatest guide to when these films are available for the BBC it probably helps to know a month as well. So as a point of reference
Monsters vs. Aliens - April 2009 Up - October 2009 If the BBC can't air Up this time around it would suggest films released in the first half of 2010 will be available for the Christmas schedule next year which would leave Toy Story 3 (July release) potentially going either way. Disney and Pixar films tend to take longer to premiere on TV compared to Disney's live action films and Dreamworks Animation which tend to be 18 months to 3 years. A Christmas Carol and The Princess and the Frog are also due to have their terrestrial premiere but I imagine neither they won't get Christmas Day. Would BBC One risk showing Alice in Wonderland on Christmas Day? it's been a long time since they've shown a live action film on the day. |

SOAP: EastEnders If people do watch Downton Abbey ahead of EastEnders, then the EastEnders repeat has been very nicely scheduled. On: BBC 3 Date: Sunday 25th December 2011 (starting in 25 days) Time: 23:05 to 00:05 (1 hour long) Another visit to the residents of Albert Square, for a regular dose of drama, excitement and tears. (4 Star) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Excerpt taken from DigiGuide - the world's best TV guide available from http://www.getdigiguide.tv/?p=1&r=132606 Copyright (c) GipsyMedia Limited. So, fans of both could either: a) watch both on ITV1 and BBC3 going to bed at 00:05 b) watch both on BBC1 and ITV1 +1 going to bed at 00:05 c) watch both on BBC1 and ITV1 using PVR going to bed at 23:35 approx. Don't forget the audience demographics are wildly different so it's not out the question for both to record good overnights. |

A lot of Disney/Pixar movies get their first pay window on Disney Cinemax (part of the Sky Movies sub), and then go to Sky Movies. |

ITV are considering running a ticker during Downton for Eastenders fans listing the score of dead & injurned on the soap.

So the timeshifting should be higher than normal. |

What if the programmes on Christmas Day on BBC1 start maybe a tad earlier than usual so maybe EastEnders goes out at 8:57 instead of 9pm for whatever reason; could this stop people from switching to Downton? It could end up denting EE's ratings as it would run into the end of Corrie.
