Which then leads to the question, how useful are those ratings. NBC is Mon/Tue/Fri, ABC Mon/Tue/Wed and CBS Mon/Tue (according to TV Newser). It's not a fair comparison at all

For "men" (and let's be stereotypical for the sake of convenience), last night ITV4 was offering Diamonds are Forever from 9, and preceding that 20 Referee Decisions That Shook the World.
As much as I dislike ITV, they do seem to have got their channel portfolio proposition broadly right.

Moving swiftly back on topic, who thought the scheduling of The Manor Reborn is sensible... 9pm last week, 9pm tonight... 9pm next week, oh, wait it's 8pm next week.

whilst I dont disagree the channel demographic are correct, I would make the point that Diamonds are Forever must be on its 1 millionth repeat by now, whilst 20 Referee Decisions That Shook the World, whilst it makes me want to kill myself, I would hope sports fans have better things to do with there time, even if its watching the Europa league last night.

That's a given, there's no sense leaving it there. They could shift it now if they wanted.

Wednesday has always been the Beeb's weakest night, going way back into the seventies and eighties, because ITV used to have Corrie there of course and also it was Thames' big night for entertainment so all their massive shows like Benny Hill used to go out there. In the nineties they used to burn off a load of crap dramas at eight, the second series of Trainer was demoted from Sundays to that slot.

And ten years ago, it was an absolute mess as ITV had Emmerdale, Corrie and The Bill and the Beeb had a load of rubbish, not helped by the fact they had to squeeze the lottery in so programmes ended up starting at five to and five past the hour. I mentioned it before but just after they moved the news they put the Attenborough series State of the Planet on Wednesdays at nine (or 9.10, as it was) and it flopped enormously with a crap lead-in and ITV showing massive shows like the last Morse.

It's always going to be a potential problem for the Beeb because it's the only weeknight without 'stEnders, so it can go from huge highs to massive lows. In that way it's better than Tuesday on ITV which is just low all the time, but that's because they refuse to put anything half decent there. I know we always talk about Tuesday on ITV but it seems as if ITV themselves are now convinced nothing will work there so don't even try to compete, when with a bit of effort they could easily do well.

As I predicted earlier on, meanwhile, in the League Cup the Beeb do have the first leg on Liverpool vs Man City, on Wednesday 11th January, and the second leg of Palace vs Cardiff on Tuesday 24th. Might put the latter on BBC2, like last year, probably not the former.

My Digiguide has The Manor Reborn at 9pm again next week, then at 8pm on the 15th due to Crimewatch taking the 9pm slot by necessity due to its content.

It's white-flag scheduling from BBC1 tonight. But then I suppose against Corrie and IAC, they may as well pitch the loathsome Knowles building something charitable and Penelope Keith's worthy effort.

I suspect BBC3 might show most football games, but hopefully not. The ones before the Opening Ceremony might get an outing on BBC2, especially with it being a Team GB debut - but in a way they might want their first Olympic action on the main channels to be the opening ceremony so hide them on the red button.

Usually football is pretty much ignored at the Olympics but I think last time BBC3 had nightly highlights of games.


They're still in repeats too I think. I guess the Pointless producers will be praying for another strike soon then.

I think The Manor Reborn was also scheduled to give the comedies on BBC2 a fighting chance.

It occurs to me that DIY SOS and The Manor Reborn are pretty much the same programme, except one is for poor chavs and the other is for poor posh people (renovate your own mansion, you upper class scroungers).

They did on BBC One Wales, sort of. No apology, but the announcer said it was a change to some listings, and The Impressions Show would be back next Wednesday at 10.45pm.

The last Inspector Morse drew 13.66 million. Wednesdays have always been a good night for ITV, especially 10 years ago (or rather 9 years ago as The Bill didn't move to Wednesdays until 2002) with Emmerdale ensuring 9m +, Corrie ensuring 13-14m+ and The Bill ensuring 7-8m+.

It's weird because Tuesday, Thursday and Friday used to be such strong nights for ITV. Tuesday, what with Emmerdale, The Bill, Peak Practice/Soldier Soldier, Thursdays with Emmerdale and The Bill, and Friday with Emmerdale, Corrie, an entertainment show like Strike It Lucky, and The Bill. Now Tuesdays are a damp squib for ITV and that's the understatement of the century, Thursdays are OK but nothing special, as BBC1 have EastEnders and the solid Watchdog, and Fridays are more even between the two channels.

Fox have announced their mid-season schedule.

Random Notes: Fox haven't yet made a decision on the future of Teenage Daughter. I suspect if it gets a back order it'll replace that New Girl repeat on Tuesday before moving back to Wednesday 9:30 in the Spring.

Touch will get a special preview screening out of American Idol on Jan 25. Mobbed is also set to air a handful of episodes Jan.-Feb. whilst Idol runs hour long audition shows.

Alcatraz will have a two-hour debut on Jan. 16 before moving to 9PM the following weeks. It'll also have a two-hour finale on March 12. By my count that's 11 (of 13) episodes so presumably they'll be another 2 hour block in place of a House repeat somewhere in February.

Napoleon Dynamite will air two episodes on Jan. 15, one out of The Simpsons and the other one out of Family Guy. Fox are certainly trying hard with it.

I see BBC have put some Week 1 details up, but not alot, Hustle returns but is unplaced (wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being Week 2) and no sign of the predicted Sherlock, but then again the "Media Centre" is piss poor in the extreme.

It's maybe because ITV abandoned such strong dramas on Tuesdays that they have become so weak on this night. Perhaps with the end of the ECL on Tuesdays, they can devote more time to drama, which is still a strong selling point for them as they have several hits and done well, ITV drama is the best in the world.

I don't understand why ITV1 haven't used the soaps to anchor the 8pm hour to be honest. I know there's an argument that 8.30pm is too late for Emmerdale but if offered a Coronation Street lead in, I think it'd be fine. If they aired the two back to back from 8-9 on Tuesday and Thursday it would stablise the nights and give some shape to the schedules which it's currently lacking.

Anyway, back to last night, and ITV1 performed excellently, benefiting from a struggling BBC One. I didn't expect Super Tiny Animals to do that well! The Wall may be something of a talking point, though, if That's Britain and Rubbish TV made it by the end of the show. Frozen Planet did well though was dented by the lead in and I'm A Celebrity's head start. MasterChef recorded a very strong figure for BBC Two and the football picked up an excellent rating for Channel 5 while Channel 4 was somewhat squeezed out.

That's assuming Sherlock does air on New Years Day. I can't see why it wouldn't given that it's a Sunday and could do mega-numbers (assuming it doesn't wind up opposite Endeavour or something).

Wouldn't surprise me if BBC One are seeing where Endeavour is scheduled before scheduling Sherlock, but BBC One still has Birdsong which is 2x90m but that could easily air January 22-29.
