Hello there JaMak Lmao at the shed analogies! And that's funny someone said that, part 41 in November I keep meaning to go back and read some of these threads as I wasn't here then. I bet it was crazy in here when he won.

Wasn't there a tweet commenting on impressive proportions, from a guy that was in a public loo with Matt some time ago?

“ (this was a WKD post from penultimate page in last house) A worldwide publishing deal gives the organisation the right to distribute music worldwide (at the risk of stating the obvious) BUT it does't require them to do so. It is effectively a defensive mechanism that stops an artist from signing with anyone else. As regards the US, therefore no-one other than Sony can sign him to a recording contractor distribute his music. It's a set back from an actual recording contract which is a contract to actually sell the record in the US, which is what 1D have now got, together with a spot supporting Big Time Rush on tour.

Matt's not ready for the US, breaking an artist like him in the states means a year of solid touring and radio station appearances which means he needs to be established in the UK before he can devote the time to the US. This means a few years at least.”

Artists sign 2 deals. One is for recording - in Matt's case that's Columbia/Syco - and the other is for music publishing (songwriting). A publishing deal is essential for artists around the world, even if they don't have a recording contract outside their home country, as a publishing country will administer the songwriting royalties, so say someone else heard Matt's song and wanted to record it, the publishing company would give clearance and collect the resulting songwriting royalties. Publishing and recording deals are quite separate.”

it has always concerned me that this worldwide deal isn't the joyous thing that might've first been thought. Seems like it could be a bit of a ball and chain for Matt - presumably it also gives Sony the right to veto Matt doing certain things, and having his songs covered by others? In other words, it gives them more control over what he does than he might like??

the positivity around this deal was always more the fact that they bothered which suggests they expect Matt's stuff to be sold around the world - which is a good thing.

US record deals are very different but whilst I am no fan of 1D, if they can make a success of it, perhaps it does open the doors for others. It's a big if though - the band they are supporting have their own TV show on Nick and even then are nothing like the premier league where US pop acts are concerned.

It's not like they are supporting Bieber or even Selena Gomez which suggests Sony know it's a big job to beak and act in the US.

Matt will only do it by going over there for at least a year and touring radio stations and doing gigs, and he needs to consolidate his position in the UK first - that's job's a very long way from being done.

I think The Script are a great example of how to break it in the US. They set themselves up a good fanbase in the UK with their debut and once that was done they went to USA and started performing small gigs and hitting the radio station - now they've got a few decent hits and have toured the country (twice I believe). OK so they're not huge but they've developed a great fanbase there - the type that an artist like Matt would love imo.

Obviously I'm delighted if it is actually a good thing, but don't they all have this sort of deal? Wasn't there news of some supposed 'bidding war' for Rebecca's publishing rights? And surely Cher and 1D have the same? I wondered if we only noticed Matt's deal because we follow every detail; I never knew if was a special thing or not. But put the way you put it WKD, it does sound very positive.
