Ironically came in 2004 when usher released confessions and it became a huge hit in the u.s. Will we ever have an album sell over 20 million again? Now with digital downloads in, an album is lucky to sell over 10 million right?

The Fame and The Fame Monster have sold about 13/14 million COMBINED, so it wasn't really close.

If Adele can't do it, then I don't have much hope that it'll happen again.

Adele's '21' will do it IMO. She'll probably be at 14.5 -15 million by year end and she's still selling at over a million a month 10 months after release. She's already passed Usher's 2004 total, btw.

And '21' is breaking records like they never existed. the latest one in the US is quite extraordinary.

Adele's "21" rises 5-3 (113,000; up 8%), marking its 39th straight week in the top five of the chart -- its entire chart run since it debuted at No. 1. In turn, it sets a record for the most weeks an album has stayed in the top five, since its debut, in the chart's 55-year history. It surpasses Michael Jackson's "Bad," which racked 38 straight frames in the top five following its bow at No. 1 on Sept. 27, 1987.

Adele so far has 12m+. That's incredible for a UK artist worldwide. I reckon she will hit 14m by New Years Day.

indeed.

Your right it's not right. Nowhere near right. In 2009 The Fame sold 5,683,000 (and another 2m in 2010 bring it up to nearly 8m) and in 2010 The Fame Monster sold 6,115,700; and while they continue to sell very very well The Fame has not sold another 7m in the past 11 months!

These yearly totals adds up to around 14m for the combinded The Fame / Monster (excluding 2011 sales for both) which is still 6m of from 20m. Which I think just shows how very very rare and hard it will be for an artist to get to 20m when a megastar like Gaga is nowhere near that even with a rerelease.

And just to add ^^^ that's only if sales from The Fame Monster are added onto The Fame as a rerelease. In some countries Monster is a totally separate release to The Fame and so is inturn counted separate, and if you take that view neither are anywhere near close to 20m and they were both incredibly successful.

I really would like Adele to sell 20m copies of 21 but will she? Sales are going to slow down, she isn't going to be selling millions and millions of copies of 21 in 2013 and so will have to sell the majority of that 7m next year to get to 20m if she does sell 13m this year as estimated.

Yep.

Yes two years before in 2002 (she's the most recent female to sell over 20m and the second most recent artist behind Usher).

Anyone daft enough to think Adele or Gaga can do it need a reality check. It all well and good shifting 12-14 million in one year but the push to sell the other 6-8 million after that initial release window is a much much more difficult job. 21 is definitely not getting there, that doesnt take away the incredible sales so far though.

I think it will happen again, more than one. However it will be when digital album prices are less and the market it wider.

I disagree in the case of Adele but only time will tell. One thing you really do need to get there is consistently high weekly worldwide sales**. Plus don't forget the 12.5 million so far sold figure is actual sales and not shipments. The industry use shipped figures so that could add anything up to 2 million onto that figure.

This decade, as far as I know, the only three artists to do it are:

Norah Jones (Come Away With Me - 2002)
Usher (Confessions - 2004)
Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory - 2000)
