RIP Freddie

I still miss him, without doubt he was the best singer.

My first memory of him was listening to the new top 30 on a Tuesday lunchtime at school when I was just 10 and hearing "Seven Seas Of Rhye". I hated the song at the time! Along with "Killer Queen" from a few months later. I remember the latter being on Top Of The Pops. Then a year later I fell in love with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and I've never stopped loving their music.

I still think "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a brilliant song, along with "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions" - what a great unofficial double A side that single was! I also love their EP from 1977, "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" is quite brilliant.

20 years ago, what a mixed day that was, trying to be happy on my dad's birthday. I'd heard the 1am news and well I don't recall sleeping much, whilst listening to the radio playing loads and loads of Queen.

Favourite Queen track, it's really really fluid, I can't define one, however on this day only one song for me. A live version of Crazy Little Thing Called Love. CLTCL, was the first thing I heard post news, and the live versions were always 200 times better than the studio. I have my favourite version tucked away and it's been played once already today.

R.I.P Freddie...My first ever gig was Queen at the Colston Hall Bristol in 75.....
As a frontman of a band, he was one of the best.

Loved the early rock stuff such as Liar, Father to Son and White Man.
Also loved the later heavy stuff .....Tear it up, The Prize and The Hitman.

Really glad someone remembers... I expected DS to have a little notice on the main site... but I guess it's not really "news", is it.
Not sure what my favorite song is, but I doubt I would have survived puberty if I didn't have Queen to listen to...best ever!!!

RIP Freddie Mercury - he was and still is the greatest showman to have lived, and that voice of his was just amazing! nobody can come close to him and the fact that many artists list him as an inspiration is a great tribute.

There will never be another as good in our lifetime.

I have many favourite Queen songs, but my favourite album track being "White Man" from "A Day At The Races" album and my favourite single is "Breakthru" from"The Miracle" album.

We love you and miss you Freddie.

Still miss Fred. 20 years ago, and it feels like yesterday. Never surpassed, and never will be.

Going to listen to Queen II right now..

It's hard to believe it's been 20 years. Queen are my favourite band and I think this vocal from this song is one his best.

'Love Is The Hero'.

When I was younger, I was always petrified of Bohemian Rhapsody. I've realised since then, it's just genius and the video was way ahead of it's time.

RIP Freddie

I was at Milton Keynes Bowl (as in 'Queen on Fire') and without doubt, Freddie was the most charismatic front man I ever saw.

I am not ashamed to admit I cried when I heard he had died and there are a few later Queen songs that I find choke me up a bit knowing that Freddie was under a death sentence when he recorded them.

He was an outlandish persona and truly gifted performer. Few front men come close to Freddie.

It is amazing that in an age when homophobia was still rife, that almost nobody cared that Freddie swang both ways and hard rockers loved Queen. It was as if Freddie was above those kind of judgments - he was just Freddie Mercury.

RIP - dearly loved and not forgotten.

Now if there was a thread on DS titled "Is Freddie Mercury the best entertainer ever", I would struggle to put together a cohesive argument against that statement.

The music critics never liked them, not least as they were musical magpies borrowing obvious influences of Led Zeppelin (just listen to 1971's Misty Mountain Hop from Four Symbols = a Queen record before Queen existed); they took their multi-tracked four vocal harmonies from 10cc; and add Freddie's love of Opera.

Queen were one of those bands that never nailed a 5 star classic album (although Sheer Heart Attack & A Night At The Opera came close), yet each studio album (bar Hot Space) contained 4/5/6 gems. And of course they were brilliant live, not least due to their extremely charismatic & flamboyant frontman with the 'tache, teeth & a fantastic voice.

If proof were needed of Freddie's influence then just listen to these clips from the past decade:

1. P!nk - Bohemian Rhapsody

7. Celine Dion - The Show Must Go On

8. Katy Perry - Don't Stop Me Now (warning clip contains a large amount of questionable vocals)

9. Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, Blake Shelton & Christina Aguilera - Queen Medley

I know. I've been thinking of this all week.

I remember it well. I was only a few weeks from having my first child. and BR very quickly became No 1. It was very much out of the blue, it was only the day before he announced he was suffering with Aids.

Loved Queen, loved Freddie and he absoloutely owned Live Aid.

RIP Fred.
