sometime ago I posted a problem I have experienced with my pvr, but cant actually find the thread, so I thought I would ask and update on the problem.

My humax has been having probs, in that its been sticking? not responding? Anyway someone kindly sent details of how to deal with it, which I could not workout how to do. But other suggestions to place it on standby I have followed.

It also transpired that I havent had a software update since 2007. Last night I moved it downstairs plugged it in and I was offered a software update, which I have never been offered whilst it was upstairs. I acceoted, and the display came up with GO OTA, seemed like it was stuck for ages, then went to ERROR IOS (I think). Nothing happened and no software up date occured. Had to keep switching it off to get it to work. Its now working but still with old software update.

Can anyone help me out and tell me what I need to do now,

The standard advice (quoted from hummy.tv):

"Switch off. Remove the aerial connection and then start the 9200. If you then have control try doing a reset to default settings. Then turn the box off, reconnect the aerial, start the 9200 and do another reset to default settings."

Note that returning to default settings means that you will have to do a rescan for channels and re-set any recording schedules/favourites. You will not lose existing recordings.

It would also be helpful if you would state what version of the software you are currently using. The current version is 1.00.23.

Not sure how or why it offered an update. There don't appear to be any Freeview over the air updates running this week. That would certainly explain why the box never found anything.

The Default Setting procedure is described on page 64 of the manual. Which is available online if you can't find yours

on the previous thread I mentioned, apparently I am not on the most recent version of the software, but as you can probably tell, I dont really know what I am talking about last one was 2007,my other box was updated in 201. I have done a default reset, I have rescanned, formatted the hard drive, apart binning it anything else I should do? wish I could find the other thread as well

1.00.21, if I remember correctly, was one of the more problematical firmware releases. In particular, users reported slow responses to the remote and problems with populating the EPG. 1.00.15 had fewer features but was more solid while 1.00.23 sorted most of the problems with 1.00.21.

The 9200T is now an obsolete machine and is unlikely to get any further updates, though 1.00.23 might be rebroadcast at some future date. It is possible to upgrade using a PC and an upgrade file downloaded from Humax's website, but this is not a straightforward process on the 9200T as it requires an RS232 serial connection - something modern laptops don't normally offer.

One alternative strategy that people tried with 1.00.21 is to remove (delete) all the unwanted channels after doing a rescan. Of the 60ish TV channels available, most people only actually watch about 20: the others can be deleted, along with most or all of the radio channels. There were some reports that this improved responsiveness.

BTW: the "antenna out" bit of my earlier post is essential for a machine that is locking up. If you've just done a default settings without removing the antenna, you should try again.

Derbyshire so not close to Norwich. Do you have any freinds or relations that know something about computers? The process of updating from a PC is not very difficult for someone with a little knowledge. If all else fails I will happily update your box for you free of charge if you pay the postage.

It is hard to be certain about these things but I think there is a reasonable chance that the software update will help.

me too, but its getting it there, and somebody above said 'but this is not a straightforward process on the 9200T as it requires an RS232 serial connection - something modern laptops don't normally offer.'

so before I begin, where do i begin?

Some still do. Also laptop docking stations usually do.

As I have said before, read http://www.tynecomp.co.uk/flash9200.html which tries to explain the process and the necessary parts and suggests where to buy them. Come back and ask questions after reading it. Thousands of people have followed the guide and managed to do it.

Well one place to start is to look around your computer for a socket that looks like this

http://www.ladyada.net/images/minipov3/Serial_port.jpg

There will be a similar looking one on the back of the Humax. If there is one on the back of your computer then you are half way there. Especially if you have a laptop as that may be easier to get up close to the Humax. Though you can take the Humax to the PC as you don't need the aerial or TV connected to update it.

You then need a lead to connect the two. For example one like this

http://www.maplin.co.uk/serial-null-...n-female-97740

Note it has to be 9 pin female to 9 pin female Null Modem if you look elsewhere.

The software and instructions for what to do when you have the Humax connected up are here.

Just click the appropriate links.

Considering that on the average laptop there are only so many places that a serial port socket can be lurking it should be easy to identify. It is after all very nearly an inch by half an inch big so if you can't see it immediately then you ain't got one

You can get USB to serial port devices that may or may not work. Humax post a link to this

http://www.maplin.co.uk/usb-to-seria...-adaptor-29968

on their Instructions page. Now whether that means they have tested it to ensure it works or are getting a back-hander from Maplin I have no idea. But it might be an alternative. You'll still need the lead though.

having completed instructions for default reset, everything seemed a lot better, a little sluggish but certainly a lot better. Felt confident enough to set some recordings in the memory, however on checking although in the 'recording schedule' nothing recorded. So I tried to record something straight of the tv. It did work, but I noticed there was a horrible noise coming from the box, when in recording mode. Almost sounds like bubbling and something stuck. I realise my box is very poorly, and could be terminal, but not sure I can afford to replace it atm.

Its chipsetProlific which appear to be a lot more reliable than other makes were years ago. I get the impression that Prolific have almost cornered the market.
Ones with the same chipset can be got for under £5 from loads of other places.
e.g. http://www.kenable.co.uk/product_inf...oducts_id=1616
or
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Serial-adapt...pr_product_top

What does vary are the instructions that come with them for installing a driver. The reviews on amazon can be very helpful if you buy one with confusing or inadequate installation instructions.

Best guess is that the hard drive is failing. I will repeat my previous offer to look at the box for you providing you pay postage.
