After updating to Android 2.3.5 I can't turn off my phone. Every time I push the button at the top which used to have the power off/restart option it just goes to lock screen.

Can anyone please help?

They mean take the battery out the phone for 30 seconds or so then put it back in.
My HTC Desire S had the same update over 2 weeks ago and also updated the HTC Sense and phone works fine.

Maybe yes but before you do that make sure you have a copy of all your phone contacts just in case you lose them on your phone.

You could go into market place and check there is no updates for your apps in case something is clashing, just a thought

Thats a good idea for my Facebook app updated over a week ago so did my Google Maps but they told me new update by just going into the apps without going though the market place,
He could try that.

I do have many apps needing updating so I will try that.

Out of interest why would that cause the problem I have?

Not wanting to patronise, but just wanted to double-check - you guys are holding the button down to bring up the Power menu, aren't you? Not just pressing it once?

Same problem here, found a "solution" somewhere else.

Go to your options and then security, scroll down and turn on "use secure credentials". If there is a password asked that you don't know, reset it with the last option in this security-menu. It worked for me.

With the "use secure credentials" enabled, the power-menu magically works again, as long as you don't reboot your phone. When you use turn-off (fastboot enabled) or use flight mode it keeps working.

If you do not need secure credential storage you can turn this feature off and get rid of this problem ("Use secure credentials" followed by "Clear all credentials")

I contacted HTC regarding this issue and was asked to perform a factory reset. This did NOT solve the issue.

There is a lot of talk on XDA about pulling the battery. Some feel this can potentially fry the on board eMMC chip bricking the device. So if you do decide to pull the battery (I have done it myself) bear that in mind.

On my HTC Desire, I have to hold the power button for what seems like forever before it does anything. Maybe that's the problem? The button's not being held down long enough? Sorry if that sounds patronising.

Apparantly unticking and immediately re-ticking use secure credentials does the same thing. I use a modded Sense 3.0 ROM so do not have the same problem.
