If she lasts a decade filled with success can she considered an icon?
As it is people think of her as an icon now and she hasn't even been in music for along time just 3 years!! But maybe if her success continues after this decade ends then maybe she can be an icon!!
Beyonce is now an icon after nearly 15 years into music!! Britney spears is the same after nearly 14 years into music!! They became ones at the end of the decade!!

Despite not liking her music, I actually think Gaga will be one of the few, and arguably most popular, musical entertainers of this decade to be remembered.

I'm not really a Gaga fan, despite thinking that Bad Romance is right up there with the greatest pop songs of the last 10 years. Although I do think she has staying power and will be around for a long long time.

She'll be around for ages yet. She's already released a couple of tracks which will be remembered for decades to come. Pokerface and Bad Romance. They'll be the 'Wannabe' and 'Baby One More Time' of the 00's!

Plus she does seem to be toning herself down a bit. The fact she's released a stripped back EP (which is being really well recieved) and slowly appearing in less OTT outfits is brilliant! She has bucketloads of talant and is starting to prove that.

I think that as long as she keeps what she's doing up and if she releases better singles from her next album, Gaga will be around for a while yet.

Her intensely loyal fan-base will keep her popular, if nothing else!

Both singles have sold around 10 million copies each and made #1 in all over the globe. Songs with stats like that don't just get forgotten.

If she was a one hit wonder then I would maybe agree, but she has since released a whole string of hits and has sold a ton of albums. No way will they be forgotten.

Pokerface will be remembered in ten years the same way 'Cant Get You Out of My Head' is remembered now.

The nice thing for Gaga IMO is I reckon the decision to stop will be hers and not the record company's. I'm not convinced she will want to go on as long as, say, Madonna, and I do worry that she will burn out due to the massive workload she subjects herself to, though. She just has to be the hardest working star out there; she has a phenomenal work ethic.

That she is toneing down the day to day image will help as a lot of people can't see past the crazy costumes to recognise what a great entertainer she is.

To gain longevity she will need to re-invent herself on a regular basis and the fact she is so creative and slips easily between musical styles should make that a breeze.

Having said that I think she will be around for as long as she wants to be ----- which actually may not be forever

Longer than some.

She is hard working for a start, she puts all her efforts into making everything perfect and she has the voice to back it all up.

As a pop star, not sure. As an entertainer, years and years.

She has two big things in her favour apart from being talented-she is likeable as a person (well I think so) and her Jazz stuff. And it would'nt surprise me with the latter, if she concentrates on that in years to come.

So I think she will be around for a long time to come, all I dont think she will take the route of say Madonna despite what might appear to be the case sometimes.

She may be a more of an entertainer like they had in the 50/60s who could entertain on several levels.

And I do think Bad Romance was one of the best pop songs of the 00s.

Will it? that was a pretty forgetable track. I doubt anybody will be raving about Gaga the way that people talk about Otis Redding, Stax , Motown , Beatles, Stones , Hendrix , James Brown. Wearing ridiculous clothes , making tinny sounding racket fests does not garuntee long term sucess. its just throwaway threadbare tat for a age devoid of any style or pannache.

I think she's already in decline. 2009 was her year, she'll never repeat it.

As long as she wants to*, in all honesty.

1. You really can't underestimate how beneficial it is to be able to write your own music. Problems arise when you're too reliant on others, and if your profile slips then you don't have the currency to buy yourself back in. If she's written hits before, she can write hits again.

2. Her business/marketing savvy. I don't believe she'd ever be in a position of not knowing what to do, let alone her label.

3. She has a massive dedicated fanbase. If she continues to solidify that, it'll become less important what the casuals buy into or not and she'll sell albums consistently (i.e. Britney).

4. She's versatile and chameleon like, so I don't think anyone would be too surprised if she genre hopped to remain relevant and fresh. If nothing else, she could retire to her piano and band with jazzy/soul/pop offerings.

5. Even if she did fall out of the spotlight, I think she's one of the only popstars out now that could believably sustain a sub-mainstream career. She could clearly still function with, or without, the public acclaim. By which I mean, you can picture her becoming a slight under-the-radar, consistent artist that continues to play gigs and produce albums for hardcore fans, maintaining her integrity. I can't see Katy Perry, Britney, Christina, Beyonce, Rihanna etc. doing that.

6. Her drive and work ethic.

* I think her health (potential Lupus) and desire for a more traditional family life would be the only things to stop her. Not flopping.

Unless she develops a bit of originality I can see her devoted fans going in searhc of someone new. I hadn't come across her until recently and, really, she is nothing special. Average singer, average song writer, extremely derivative dancer - an almost exact hybrid of Madonna and Michael Jackson, ridiculous image - her own idea or thrust on her by her manipulative management anxious to detract from her, frankly, ugly visage? I cannot help but think she is the triumph of hype over mediocrity.

Triumph of hype over mediocrity is people like Cheryl Cole, at least Lady Gaga has the talent to back herself with.

I will give her 3 more years at the most, wannabe's dont last the pace. Problem is she is known more for her none music stuff then her music, she cant possibly survive in the music industry like that. As her current fans grow older they will move onto someone new.

Mediocrity impies some talent however minimal, Cole is a complete talent vacuum, with nothing about her whatsoever other than a transient hyping by Cowell and his infernal minions.

Although not really a fan of Gaga, I think if her career came to a sudden halt right now, people would look back at her and remember her career had been extremely successful. In years to come she would probably be remembered heavily for being very out of the box, her fashion sense and being different as well as her work with the gay community.

Her music will stand alone. Despite not liking her music, I give her credit because she does put in a lot of work into her albums + singles unlike some artists.

After witnessing your 'Adele's sales in the US' prediction thread I am now off to the bookies to put a wad on Gaga lasting 20 years+.

We're talking about Lady Gaga, not Taylor Swift.

I don't think she's in decline. She isn't as big because people are becoming used to her crazyness, so it's not as hyped as it used to be. And she had a hell of a lot of hype back when she burst onto the scene, that as well as some really catchy pop songs. Rarely will artists have that same level of hype throughout their entire career so just because she isn't talked about as much, doesn't mean she's in decline. She's sold 8 million albums this year and I don't even think Born This Way is that good. If she comes with a third album which has strong pop songs on she might even outsell Born This Way. I'm no fan of hers but I do think she'll be around for a long while.

I'm not a huge fan but, Yoü And I is a good song.

The Lady Is A Tramp with Tony Bennett shows she has a great voice.

She will be around for a while.
