I'm not much of a cheese eater, there's very few types I do eat. I am however, a fan of very strong cheddars. I like the sorts with such strong flavours they almost make your eyes water! The last time I asked for their strongest at the Tesco cheese counter, they gave me 'Seriously Strong Cheddar'- which was anything but.

Could somebody recommend me a really good mature which can be bought without too much difficulty? All supermarkets should be manageable but obviously I'm stuck when it comes to varieties only sold in certain regions. I had a look online and heard some good things about 'Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar', but it seems Tesco no longer stock it.

Please help! Thanks in advance

We absolutely love Colliers and rarely buy any other cheese now. We only find it at Tesco and got some just this week. Beautiful strong cheese.

I often go for a Canadian cheddar if I'm looking for a good powerful one and am prepared to spend a bit more than usual

You could try Little Black Bomber from the Snowdonia Cheese Company, as well as their Pickle Power with chunks of Pickled Onion in it.

I rarely buy strong Cheddar but I'm shocked that a deli would recommend Seriously Strong Cheddar. If you have a Waitrose they often have a wide range of Cheddars behind the counter (as well as under the glass) and they should let you taste before buying.

Tickler is very good, though maybe not strong enough to comply with your masochistic needs!

Sainsburys extra mature Canadian cheddar, made by Ontario creameries, is my favourite

Cornish Crackler is nice.
So are a couple from ASDA. Kintyre is 5 strength and Wyke Farm is a 6 I think. There are a couple of other 5 strenghts also.

If you want anything stronger you might have to find a deli/cheesemonger.

Thanks so much for all the responses! Looks like I've got a few different options to investigate now, I may well try and pick up two or three of these. The Black Bomber has certainly had enough votes to catch my attention, although I'd still be interested to see if I can source the Collier's and possibly another

I'll report back with my findings!

I don't think she was particularly interested in giving me a serious recommendation to be honest. She probably felt inconvenienced that I had asked, rather than just telling her what I wanted

I have a number of Waitrose stores locally, I'll check one of those out as I'd be much more confident in their knowledge (or maybe not, as the one where I grew up was always staffed by students!).

Are you ok for ordering online? If so there are no other Cheddars out there that compare With Keen's or Montgomery's. You may be able to pick them up at certain deli's or if you have a artisan cheese supplier. I prefer Montgomery's but Keen's is stronger

I'd love to order online, but I'm finding the £20-25 minimum orders plus postage somewhat off-putting. I'm only really buying for myself and my mother as a treat for Christmas Day evening and wasn't necessarily looking to spend quite so much on it! There is the convenience factor of course, but then I can't try anything either...

I discovered that my local Tesco does actually stock Colliers today! I've bought some and it's certainly tasty (and extremely well priced at £2.50 for 400g)- but I'm after something stronger

Another vote for Montomery - local chesemongers in Edinburgh does it. I love it - it is so strong it hurts my mouth!

A favorite of mine is "Coastal" It is a mature English Cheddar with those calcium crystals that I love to find in aged cheese.
I have bought it from Costco but am sure it is stocked elsewhere

I was going to recommend the Ford Farm range too http://www.fordfarm.com/default.aspx?p=welcome

I bought at small "Truckle" in Costco at the weekend for just £3.49, and it is absolutely delicious.

They also had the big Truckles in stock but I didn't notice the price. Would be nice at Christmas if you had a lot of folks coming.

M&S Cornish Cruncher (in the black wrapper) is very tasty. Not ultra-mature but really, really tasty. I notice recently a lot of similar sounding cheddars are popping up...
