Sudden death of dwarf lop eared rabbit
~Twinkle~
26-11-2011
Last night we went out to our rabbit to put him away for the night as we always do. He has a run outside during the day but he's brought indoors at night to keep him safe from foxes. We thought he was playing possum when he didn't move to go into his hutch as he usually does but he was dead. He was only four years old and showed no signs of being unwell.

He'd been running around as normal, he had the wonderful habit of picking up a piece of straw and running in circles as if he wanted to build us a nest, he'd do the same thing with a slice of carrot and did just that yesterday afternoon but now he's dead, unexplained, sudden.

He was healthy, he was eating, drinking, no diarrhea, no obvious indication that there was anything wrong.

Why did he die? My heart is broken. Okay, he was "only" a rabbit as some may say, but he was a character, a living creature, a beautiful one and I loved him and now he's gone, too soon.

how sad, poor bunny. i'm very sorry for your loss

were there any loud bangs or fireworks going off in your area last night? or could a fox have come in to bother him during the day?
they can literally scare a bun to death sometimes
he may have had a heart attack with the fright
or he could have had a congenital defect and just passed away.
you won't really know for sure what happened unless you have a post mortem at the vets

once again, i'm very sorry to hear, it's really sad when there's no where to turn for an explanation
i've had a few guinea pigs who have passed away well before their times with no outward signs whatsoever, they've been happily eating a few hours before hand & had a cuddle, but when i check on them again in a few hours/the next day they've sadly passed on

Thank you for your condolences. No fireworks, safe from foxes, a complete mystery. Irreplaceable, a lovely natured cuddly rabbit gone forever. I'll never be able to kiss his nose ever again. RIP
