Will someone please tell Bruce Forsyth that seven standing ovations by a manipulated audience does not mean there were seven outstanding performances.

Thank you!!.

I could not agree with you more. Last night I went through YouTube and found Ricky and Natalie's AT and when they realised that the crowd (quite rightly) were on their feet both of them were stunned. This year's contestants seem to expect it and it's getting to the point where they're more surprised if the audience aren't standing at the end of a mediocre routine.

Even Lavrentiy Beria prudently makes sure he's the last one to sit down and stop clapping when confronted by the Strictly Floor Fuhrer

I actually thought last night by the time we got to the 3rd dance with Alex & James, they actually showed relief not expectation. I mean, could you imagine now being on the show and not getting the audience standing? I don't think any of the performers are under any illusion: they see the floor managers, they see Brucie exhorting everyone to get to their feet. It's becoming utterly meaningless now.

If I thought they'd listen I'd ring up ITT's 'Points Of You' but they only ever broadcast praiseworthy, twee comments.

Nothing constructive at all.

I went to a live comedy show once and the warm up guy said even if we werent the type to laugh out loud we had to do it then, as loudly as we could and clap everytime the comic said something remotely funny with our arms very high in the air.
This standing ovation thing is getting on my wick - in fact a lot of the antics are really spoiling the show this year for me (apart from the majority of bad dancers, but thats another thread!).
I am one of the minority I think who doesnt even like the clapping during the dancing as if they've done something marvelous. They only have to step onto the stage and do a twirl and they're clapped.
Don't get me started on the VTs! (again another thread).
The comment about Craig - he is not in any way encouraging the audience by technical comments, if you have noticed others get nervously booed when they make a negative, and surely he's allowed to say something for goodness sake, otherwise lets just bring on four whatserfaces from Dirty Dancing next year.

I can recall several occasions in previous series when there has been apparently massive cheering from the crowd, and the camera has caught a shot of the audience, and they were all sitting quietly.

It used to be fairly obvious that a lot of the cheering was simulated.

I guess the floor manager is trying to get the audience to fit in with the (pre-arranged) soundtrack.

I suspect that the soundtrack on ITT is enhanced too.

I live for those moments.

We've had it this series with Brucie yelling "Look! Look!" when it's actually four ladies standing behind him and everyone else resolutely on their seats.

Every week I find myself yelling "Oh, shut up, Bruce" at the telly.

The "Look, look" thing is really, really getting worse.

I reckon with so few couples left, they will adopt the 'Infants School' mindset. Everyone is a winner and will get a SO for a mediocre dance.

We reward mediocrity in this country but that's another subject.

The audience will no doubt be whipped into a frenzy again next week.

He's so short sighted now, that's the only part of the audience he can actually see! The size of the wording on his autocue is so large, you can read it from the very back of the audience!

It's the warm up guy - Stuart Holdham - who encourages everyone to whoop and cheer and to boo the judges especially Craig. He does tell everyone to only give a standing ovation if they think the dance is worth it - apart of course, for the obligatory standing ovation for "Sir Brucie". I sometimes wonder what would happen if someone in the front row refused to stand up when he comes on stage - I suspect they'd be ejected rather promptly.

Various US artistes have said that they found the audience at Strictly a bit subdued compared to the DWTS audience, so they're obviously trying to get everyone to be as loud and noisy as the Americans.

I don't think the studio audience is noisy enough. SCD is essentially a pantomime so the booing is entirely predictable, and the old ham point out each and every 'standing ovation' is context appropriate albeit irritating given that it's pointing out the obvious and milking it for all its worth. And no one over-milks an opportunity like Brucie. Paradoxically that's what so many people love him for - his innate naffness.

If the judges kept their cool and calmly explained why they are scoring a dance then the studio audience might be put in its place and the audience at home (wherever) would boo them!

You can never rule out the possibility that Len is only pretending to get all flustered when the studio audience boos him.

Boooooooooooooooooo!

I don't mind the clapping and cheering after each dance. Although I think standing after the majority of dances undermines the accolade of receiving a standing ovation.

What really got me last night though, and it's the first time I've heard it, was the ridiculous hollering and screeching during Harry and Aliona's dance. This is a dance show, not a trip on the waltzers.

What kind of pathetic idiot does that during filming of a civilised show?! It's not ITV you know....

I won't be surprised if the latest elimination is described as a "deferred success."

Christ, what a miserable bunch some of you are. With one million people applying for tickets and only 600 ish getting into the studio each week I would feel so damn lucky should I be fortunate enough to be there you just try and stop me screaming my head off! I'm not saying I yell all the way through but yes, I might go a bit crazy when my favourite couple comes on or when I don't agree with something. It's a live show and the audiences gut reaction creates an atmosphere and a bit of intensity. The production team are just trying to create a good show!

Lol I know we must sound miserable but I really don't object to the audeince cheering at the beginning and at the end of the dances but I hate that "wooo-uuh wooo-uuh" that the audience were doing during some of the dances last night.

Much of it wouldn't happen if it weren't aggressively encouraged by the floor managers.

And it can be counter-productive.

I like to turn up the sound on my little (turn of the century) tv so I can hear the dance music loud.

But then if the audience whoops during the dance the picture freezes, thus editing the next bit out!

Last week the Strictly band blogged about the technical side of getting the sound right both in the studio and the tv. Have a look here (last paragraph):
