Just seen the omlibus, they didn't have use a lot of zoom cams.

When I was studying media, the one golden rule with camera work was don't film while zooming.

Rubbish rule if you ask me.

Corrie used to zoom up close to people's faces a lot during emotional or dramatic scenes and I always thought it was very effective. Shame they don't do it more these days.

I agree, I did Media when I was at college and that is a rule not to zoom whilst filming. The scenes last night didn't look like camera zooms. You could tell they had been added during editing.

And zooms are brilliant in dramatic scenes.

I studied media too and yes we were told "don't zoom during a shot: it is unnatural".

Actually there are plenty of films that use them (pretty sure some Sergio Leone westerns). And of course it is a traditional part of soap opera grammar (especially US daytime serials). Earlier episodes of "The Bill" were full of zoom in shots. Used properly (and not overused), zooms can be great.

I think it is a silly "rule" but they say that in media courses to stop students from mindlessly zooming in and out and in again during a shot. That can look amatuerish.

Most feature films actually use tracking shots not zooms. You can tell because the items closer to the camera move out of shot faster than the items further away.

I'd really love to ask the three FMs who did media studies what they're doing now.....but they may be a bit embarrassed to answer.

And as someone who left school at 16, and definitely didn't do media studies, I'd like to say:

1. Only those who fully know the rules, and understand why they're there, can break them. And I bet none of them did media studies.

2. I can recognise a tracking shot...the scenery moves. There's no need to be patronising.

I wasn't being patronising. All I'm saying is when I studied Media I was always told not to zoom when filming as it could look silly. In the films I made I only added the zoom effect during editing.

I did 'Media Studies' for a while and was told about 'zooming' looking silly or words to that effect.

When the tram crashed last year in Corrie; there was a scene in Fiz's house that focused on John.

That really worked (for me.) It does add to the 'drama.'

I accept that you didn't intend to be patronising ...but I don't think you needed to explain the difference between 'zoom' and 'tracking'.

I was clearly misled when you said "I did Media ".

...........But if students are being taught this in their courses, it's probably fair. For, as you say, you need to know the rules to know how to break them.
I didn't do art studies, either, but I'm really annoyed when, just because people like Lowry, Picasso and Dali broke all the rules. some people try to paint like them, and claim they're artists.

The artists named understood the rules ...and broke them brilliantly.

I also did the same course, I hate it when people get it mixed up with the other sort of media (the one were you sit around and watch films, instead of proactively creating them xD)

Good to hear you got a job in media though

Jeez, you're a ray or sunshine, aren't you? To make such an assumption on the lives of people you don't know is horrid.

And how was the OP being patronising?

Chip? Shoulder?

As I was taught by an enlightened teacher in school a long time ago, rules are there to be broken
A watch of The Story Of Film: An Odyssey on More 4 will show just how rules are broken for good effect.

Ah yes the old 'zoom in and pull back' kind of thing whereby the character appears to come closer while the background pulls away.

I think that was a Hitchcockian invention but I could be wrong.

Sorry, my fault, it was someone else explained 'tracking'.

Where do I assume anything? You shouldn't make incorrect assumptions from mere questions.

And where do i accuse the OP of anything?

The name for this shot is a "Vertigo" shot, It's probably most well known for its appearance in Jaws.
