Me too. The band has excellent musicians and Dave Arch is first class, but they can only play what they are asked to play. Singers not brilliant though !

I totally agree with you. The music has been absolutely dire for most of this series. Especially the track for Artem and Holly's foxtrot, that screeching woman's voice was particularly awful , resulting in me turning the sound down. Such a contrast with Lance Ellington's spot on the Results Show. He is a great singer, but as usual an ungracious BBC didn't even mention he was singing.

I'm not averse to trad ballroom dances being danced to modern music occasionally IF it has the right tempo and mood and IF the SCD singers' interpretation is likely to bear any resemblance to the original. I think the music this series has been particularly poor and if it is solely the pros' choice, then they need to buck their ideas up.

Even though I agree that there should be no need to re-use a piece of music given the amount there is sloshing around, I can understand the odd song being re-used if it didn't work too well first time around. I remember from a couple of series ago, Darren and Lilia did a pro demo of a lindyhop or something like that to the Noisettes' 'Wild Young Hearts'. IMO it didn't work for their dance but from the minute I heard it I thought it would make a brilliant quickstep, and I'm hoping someone uses it for a QS in the future.

The problem with choosing to re-use a piece of music associated with one of the all-time great SCD dances is that the couple are instantly putting themselves at a disadvantage because even if their dance is 100% pure 40/40 magic (unlikely), when the audience/public hear 'I'm Still Standing' (for example) they're immediately more likely to think of the original iconic dance than the new one. Surely it's in the pro's interest to make the audience associate X song forevermore with their celeb and their choreography, just in case it does turn out to be one of those 'magic' dances?

In the end it's the producer's choice, they balance the show to appeal to a very wide audience, (ratings again), I can accept that, so then it becomes a bit subjective.

The people appearing on the show, always follow the BBC "party line." Yes the dancers may say they choose the music, but it isn't quite like that, as someone else has said, the pros may suggest something, but they can't insist on dancing to it. Given some of the "choices" they must have been insane if they chose it, Eleanor Rigby a few years back, always comes to mind.
Someone on here a few years ago when this question came up as it does each year, said they'd read in the SCD annual that a dancer said that they didn't choose the music. Mind you I think it was better then, but producers come and go.

Nor will you ever hear the dancers or the judges criticise the choice of music, though Len came close to it last night.

I thought that they'd said it was GaGa's "Just Dance" which was later used for a pro dance.... unless there were two mentioned.

This sounds the most likely, especially given that so many of the song choices are utterly insane!

I know that last year, Natalie said on ITT that she wanted to use "King of the Swingers" from the "Jungle Book" for their Quickstep after Scott came into rehearsal one day singing it and she just thought it would be a brilliant song for a QS.

So it does seem like it could be that song choices are submitted by the pros/couples and the producers either approve them or disapprove them and give out an alternative random piece of music.
