You say "I want broadband and WiFi at home as it's far more relaible than any mobile service", so do I on my computer, but on my phone I'm perfectly happy leaving it on 3G. It downloads my podcasts, and all the apps and services work just fine without having to worry about going over allowance.

I'd have to be deliberately concious of this on O2 and watch my data usage / streaming when out to cope with such a small allowance, besides which O2 3G doesn't perform well outside of major towns and cities, if you're in a smaller area you're f&()£D.
But who cares what technology a mobile uses when you are at home? I don't care if it switches over to Wi-Fi as it's much quicker anyway and it uses that to update apps etc. I never use 3G mobile data at home.

More important for me when out is being able to call or text folks and with 99%+ of the population covered I'll go with a network that has both GSM and UMTS available for communication priorities. Where I travel locally, and I doubt if Im unique, it's mostly urban and has 3G coverage from all the networks.

I think if asked most folks would tell you that they buy a mobile phone to use as a telephone and text messaging device first and foremost.

Internet use is becoming more important but it won't replace the above two killer applications!

And Three offers 97% population coverage, which is suitable for the majority of people. The majority of users on the network are happy. The difference in percentage between the top and the bottom of the Ofcom survey isn't that wide.

Its pretty wide. 3 have almost twice as many dissastisfied customers than O2. (10% on O2 - 19% on 3). 3 have 60% satisfied vs O2's 72%.

I am sure 3 UK must be concerned and want to improve on these statistics if they want to keep the customers they have invested to attract.
