Well at the risk of seeming xenophobic most of them are descended from poor British peasants and political radicals who would have been hung had they stayed here.

I saw an interview with political commentator in Washington a few years ago who maintained that the war of Independence was the worse thing that happened to America and they would have been better off if they still accepted the monarchy.

I have many American friends and it is a great fun sparring with them over this issue.
