I hate when she sings like she has hicups I find it really annoting I much prefer when she sings naturally like your song and in the charity song she sounds so much better

It's called "personal style", "secret call for the Irish vote" or "goat's syndrome", depending who you talking to...

I like her voice sometimes though just don't like when she sings like that

It's called iconic indivuality. Maybe once your faves have retrieved their weaves from Janet's clutches she can teach them a thing or two about it.

I suspect it's because she has learned to sing in a classic Irish traditional style using what is referred to as sean-nos. Best described as adding ornamentation to your voice and usually when you sing without instruments accompanying you. You'll hear it in any Irish pub known for trad Irish music.

You'll find the something similar in South Africa. Miriam Makeba added clicking sounds to her songs.

Wikipedia has the best explanation of sean-nos.

It's a vocalising effect, a style added to singing, usually to make a plain voice sound a little more interesting. It's very effective if used sparingly, especially as an echo effect, with an upward inflection added at the end of a sustained note.

But if the singer tries to force it into every lyric it begins to sound very odd, and they can also come unstuck. Janet struggled in her uptempo song a week or so ago when she lost the beat because of the delay caused by her forcing the effect into each rapidfire lyric, and much the same thing happened with her US equivalent, Drew, in X Factor USA last week, where for the first time that girl sounded untidy in places.

I found her yelps and "owws" at the end of words (for example in the RCHP song when they weren't called for) really irritating. In Sweet of Child of Mine (which I liked and thought she did well) she wound up pronouncing "cry" as "croooy" or something

I thought she was OK in her audition as the yodelling wasn't as pronounced but to me she totally overdoes it now and it makes her unlistenable to ... it's like nails down a blackboard where she yelps practically at the end of every line

i agree, it was totally overdone in Under The Bridge .. it distracts from the lyrics and ruins the song

her voice is too little girlie for me but each to their own, it's the constant yelping that makes me want to switch over when she's on
