The difference is the power in the voice. Adele can sing through the nerves, Lana can not yet. Having seen both live I can say that while Adele was completely overwhelmed at the Hollywood Bowl with 19000 people there, her voice still sounded flawless. She was literally bouncing up and down in between songs. Scared shitless! But in control of her voice, always. Lana kind of drifted in and out of character and was very inconsistent on the vocals, yet there was something about her. If she can pull all of this together, it's gonna be a huge year for her. Hell, even if she can't, it's gonna be a huge year. The hype is crazy.
The good news is that her voice can be weaker, it does not need a lot of power. And if she happens to be off one night or gets wasted before a show (not saying she does) it won't be as noticeable (compared to the power vocals by Adele). Guess I should have moved this to the appreciation site. Sorry.

I would agree with all that, shades. The thing is I think Lana's voice will always divide people much more than Adele's does. This performance is a case in point - I think it's amazing even though there are again inconsistencies in delivery (some would say she's trying to sing too low, I suppose). But the comments are interespersed with 'she has an amazing voice' and 'she just can't sing', lol.

If she didn't look the way she does, would her inconsistency be more glaring? If she looked like Adele would there be the hype? Adele misses one note and it's written up. Obviously we will never know. And does it really matter anyway? It's entertainment, pure and simple. She reminds people of the 60's and is cool as hell. "Shut the Fack up". Come on, that's classic! I hope her machine doesn't get rid of the crazy. Please don't smooth that down!!

Just seen the performance. Wow, that was pretty terrible. I think I'll stick to her recorded tracks

I actually think her album is going to underperform.

Wow one mediocre performance and people are writing her off.

I don't expect the album to fly off of the shelves in its first week but I bet that it hangs around the top 20 for a long time racking up sales throughout the year.

i don't understand why she performed video games anyway. `born to die` single should be out in the uk already. especially since its available in other territories. personally, i think it could be a huge hit single! its getting loads of plays on the music channels.

i doubt think people are writing her off over last nights performance. people are critiquing her honestly without making bitchy comments. besides, `video games` is still rising on itunes.

wow, people are being way too critical of one performance. It wasn't even that bad by any means, just wasn't amazing. Hopefully she nails it for SNL or else there'll be "Is Lana Del Rey finished" threads by the looks of it

Oh and this performance of The End Of The World from a few years ago is gorgeous so we know she can completely cut it live. Her voice seems to be naturally quite jazzy.

Anyone who says she can't sing live is completely off their trolley, she has an amazing voice. She's not an amazing belter in the vein of Adele but there's more than one way to get across the emotion in a song. I think she just has a problem with nerves when on TV which is completely understandable given her inexperience. She'll get better in time, I'm sure. But the talent is more than there, it's there in abundance and her voice is amazing. And very different to what's currently in the charts.


PS Note the complete absence of backing singers also. They have been known to help out many an untalented pop diva in the live arena before now.

Is that truly live though? It looks like one of those videos where the artist is miming over a previously recorded "live" version. There was another video I saw of hers which looked the same.

I don't think she has a very strong voice really. When she sings live it kind of sounds like she's stuggling to stay in tune at times and it can be a little uncomfortable to watch for me. I'm not someone who cares about "big" voices or technically perfect vocals but I still like an artist to get the basics right and have confidence in their voice and singing ability if you know what I mean.

I don't see her as being anything special at all yet but I'll listen to the album to see what I think of the recorded songs.

Lovely video but does remind me of a music video, whatever though, still love. She's Nancy Sinatra all over.

When can we expect to see her getting bigger in the UK. I feel atm she is starting to become slightly more known like with the Jonarthon Ross performance. Her songs or new one doesn't seem to be getting much airplay or i haven't heard any at all.

apparently, she`s #49 on the airplay chart. i have seen the video tons of times on the music channel`s though.

Bizarrely, she's B listed on Radio 2 but I can see no mention of her on Radio 1 (their playlists seem to have almost disappeared unless I'm looking in the wrong place).
