UK From Music Week

Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die is on the verge of becoming the first album this year to sell more than 100,000 copies in a week in the UK as Leonard Cohen heads towards his highest-charting release in more than four decades.

Del Rey’s Polydor-issued album had sold around 92,000 copies up until the end of business on Thursday, according to the Official Charts Company, putting it more than 60,000 sales ahead of the rest of the market.

With two more days of trading still to go, Born To Die’s figures for this week are already very impressive given in the first four weeks of 2012 sales of the number one album have ranged from 20,678 to 38,380 copies across an entire week.

It's gonna be way over 100k, there's Friday and Saturday sales still to come. Oh, and she's Featured Artist in my local Asda, lol.

I think i've been a bit harsh towards her, so I decided to download the album and give her a fair trial.

She's not as bad as I made her out to be, but she has definitely been overhyped massively. Radio is a very nice song. The album dragged on though.

Favourite songs from Born to Die are...... born to Die and Million Dollar Man without a shadow of a doubt, both are produced incredibly, her voice on both is amazing and the lyrics take you somewhere, they are also the only songs in my opinion that the producer caught the emotion in her voice. I mean I like dark paradise, but the vocal is nowhere near as good as it could have been, and it doesn't have the delivery or emotion of born to die, just my opinion!

Kristen Wiig doing Lana Del Rey on last night's Saturday Night Live addressing the backlash from her performance.

"Thankyou Seth. From the reaction I got you'd think I'd been clubbing baby seals to death while singing the Taliban national anthem".

Genius

Lol, love it. It's ironic that the country she's getting the baddest rep from for artifice is the US.

PS Anyway, apparently some of her US critics have decided it's OK to like her again now after her 'redemption' on Letterman. Phew, what a relief....

PS Newtonsaid, my current favourite on the album is Million Dollar Man - fantastic tune and vocal performance.

It really is amazing the disparity between critic's reviews and user reviews - its almost as though some reviewers were trying to second guess a huge public backlash and have gotten it spectacularly wrong.

The Independent review above at least seems to get it - I really don't care if the Del Rey inhabiting these songs isn't the real Lana - the album plays out as a beautifully Lynchian soundtrack, and that for me is way better and more interesting than any note perfect Mariah or Whitney album.

Such a shame Twin Peaks is no longer being made - the sound track for it would basically be made up of LDR songs!

The backlash she's got just because of a couple of duff live TV performances is ridiculous. I think it just shows what idiots the press are. They, and sadly many hardcore music fans are besotted with the idea that the only music that is credible is that made by white men playing guitars, not white ladies. She keeps taking stick for being a posh New York girl. Never stopped people loving the Strokes who are posh New York boys did it?

I think it also irritates them that she initially got big through the internet and they had nothing to do with it. I'm sick of the sneering jealously this artist has had to take. Its testimony to the fact that she is good that she's upset the apple cart though.

The album gets better everytime I listen to it, I'm now loving tracks that didn't hit me at first. I don't think there's a bad song on it. Beautiful piece of work, may well be the best album that gets released all year.

Seen the news story where she says she's going to quit because she says she feels like she's done everything she wanted to do. I really hope that's not the case as she's something special. I hope the backlash she's taken hasn't influenced that decision.

That was amazing, and they actually had very good points.

How many people have been rejected, but tried again differently?
How many have changed their style?
How many have changed their name?

And how many have forgotten Ashlee Simpson?!

^^^^^ Pretty much agree with all of this post! This album will probably end up with one of the biggest difference in scores between critic reviews and user reviews in metacritic history!

PS That SNL video is hilarious! I do love the fact they took the p*ss out of Lana but also her haters.

I don't know why some fans are getting so upset about the critics. Jessie J got bad reviews last year and it didn't do her any harm when it came to selling records. From what I've seen critics have been quite consistent in what they don't like about the songs and music on the album so I don't think you can say it's all unjustified or unfair personal criticism. I'm sure there are some badly written, unfair reviews but they are to be ignored and most people will be able to see them for what they are.

I wondered why they didn't mention her as well but I guess it was probably too obvious.

Where the album and her singles have ended up on the charts this week. Put in a spoiler as I know they may not have been officially announced on Radio 1 yet.
