Every year a newspaper or someone on the radio "discovers" that Hootenanny is not live but if you watch the programme there are usually some tongue in cheek clues to it not being live. Someone would have to be very naive to think that the BBC could afford to hire people like Kylie Minogue, Paul McCartney etc on New Year's Eve!

I bet some think the pope does his Christmas Day thing in St Peter's Square live when he is probably tucking into his Christmas Pudding.

More evidence that your thread is a wind up

Not quite, the dance off was always after the main Saturday show regardless as to whether it went out live on Saturday, or recorded for transmission on Sunday, so the studio was still being used straight rthrough and the crews were all there, albeit for an extra hour or so (rather than having to be booked for the following night).

Or have i misunderstood that reply?

Here's another dampener then - the sounds of Big Ben that you hear on the digital TV or DAB radio are actually delayed by at least two seconds, sometimes more, as the digital signal has to be encoded at the broadcast end (which takes a bit of time), and decoded at the receiving end (which takes even more time, and varies from TV to TV, PVR to PVR). So you might be seeing in the New Year (if that's your preference) a second or so after your neighbours!

A couple of years ago there was a story in the local paper about one family celebrating Hogmanay being confused why fireworks went off outside before midnight. Then they realised they had paused their digital TV whilst someone went outside to get some coal for the fire resulting in them watching the BBC Hogmanay programme several minutes behind the rest of Scotland!

Even analogue radio is not real time because the distribution system is digital which puts a slight delay on the programme.

If there are still any doubters out there Bill Turnbull was interviewing Anita and Robin on Breakfast this morning and talked about her being voted off 'on Saturday, I mean Sunday'!

Well, regardless as to when the Results show was shown or recorded, strictly speaking she was voted off on Saturday as that is when the phone voting took place and when the phone voting closed (even if the result had not been made known to the studio audience.

Although some will no doubt see it differently.

If it was live Robbie Savage wouldn't have been there due to Gary Speed dying. They do it so Brucie can go home and not have to come back on a Sunday. I think the final Sunday show will be live as it will be the final and hasto go up against X Factor

For those who think it's a 'swizz' that they don't shatter the magic of television by saying the Sunday show is a prerecord, you might like to know that the QI Christmas Special was filmed in March.

But I'm sure they'll tell you that so you don't feel cheated

Much more likely they do it purely for cost and logistical reasons, as Bruce does indeed go home now and leave Tess to it (the results show happens later that night, regardless).

The final results show on Saturday Dec 17th will be live.

Not sure what you mean here. None of the Sunday shows will ever be live because the BBC will never film SCD on a Sunday. If you mean the results shows, then any which are live will by definition be aired on a Saturday.
Also, the X-Factor is one week ahead of Strictly - their final will be aired the same week as the SCD semi-final.

When they started pre-recording the results show on the Saturday night it was so that Brucie could have Sunday off (always working two days on the trot was too much for him, understandably). But then they changed it so that he can pop off home at 8 because working until 9.30 again proved too much - he has to be in on Wednesdays for scripts etc, then in on Friday for rehearsals, then all day Saturday for final changes and a run through, then the final show. Its understandable that, once he got to 80 he found such a long day tough; thats a long day for anyone.

But now that the results are handed over to Tess and Claudia, and they've settled in nicely, why not go back to a live results show on Sunday night for these two to do? Watching the Sunday show always seems weird when they refer to 'last night' etc, and it seems flatter and a less suspenseful. It gives them a longer run of voting too. Brucie has given up the Sunday show so surely they are free to go back to the way they used to do it?

The way they used to do it was to air the show live on Saturday, not Sunday. They will never go back to that because they will lose viewers to X-Factor. The Sunday show is carefully timed to avoid a clash.
As for changing to a live Sunday show, why on earth would they? The cost of collecting the celebs and pros, putting them up in hotels, catering for them, bringing back all the production staff... don't forget, the couples would have to put their costumes and make-up back on which would be time-consuming and costly.
And if that's not enough, the pros lose a day to rehearse routines or choreograph for their celeb; and the celebs lose a rest day or a day's training. For the sake of a 35 minute show? What a waste of money

As I remember they moved the results show to Sunday at the height of the ratings battle with X Factor, either to try and steal a chunk of Sunday figures or (maybe more likely ) to make Saturday night more flexible as I think they found it difficult to schedule Casulty (or whatever was after SCD) and have the freedom to mess with the timing of the main show to chase X Factor round, and have a results show. I don't think it was anything to do with Bruce

Don't think the results show has EVER been live on a Sunday. Regardless of transmission day it has always been either recorded for the Sunday transmission or shown Live on Saturday. It would be a total waste of the Licence fee to do the whole thing over two days. It would cost virtually as much as the Saturday show to do everything again on the Sunday.

The Sunday show has never been looked at properly in terms of entertainment or content since the format for choosing who left went back to the original version 50/50 judges & public. Now there is thankfully no dance off, surely it would be simpler to have a short results show along side the lottery and a more action packed main show.

I'm sure the results have always been filmed on Saturday and shown live or broadcast the next day.

It would be logistically daft to bring everyone back the next day. They need a day off even if they choose to work elsewhere.

The results show has never been shown live on Sunday, it has always taken place on Saturday and either shown live that evening, or later on Sunday, I would have thought that Bruce had little to do with that

As demonstrated by the ratings which match, and sometimes exceed those of the main programme, it must be providing some sustained entertainment value.

And maybe few people would bother with a spot that lasted only a matter of a few minutes, few would see it as worth waiting around for, or worth missing other programming on other channels.

Either way, it's been good fun.

I have a confession to make too. I always thought ITT was live until this year, when Alex didn't have time to get to the One Show from Zoe's sofa.

Tbf, I heard Zoe saying 'live tonight' on ITT, so I can see where I might have got the wrong impression!

ITT is live except for the pre-record bits (ie interviews this year with Alex (and last year with Matt and Aliona) plus the bits in the costume cupboard).

So, on Wembley week you thought everyone (6,000 people) turned up again on the Sunday night just for the results? The BBC really do take the p*ss out of the public in maintaining this charade! On a really serious note - I'm not sure how Robbie Savage must have felt, having lost his very good friend Gary Speed, to been shown as acting perfectly normal on Sunday night when he was obviously elsewhere feeling anything but normal!
