What is happening to this decade of viewers?

I don't understand why people can't vote primarily on talent. Let alone, why people feel the need to direct silly 'hate' comments to contestants on the show? Back in the early days of X Factor, the show used to be fun and viewers voted on how well contestants performed on the night. But now, with each show, brings comments of stupidity.

Viewers have never voted primarily on talent. (see: Steve Brookstein winning.)

X-Factor is a soap not a talent contest, that's how the show creates its drama and media interest. And how people are made to get so emotionally invested in the contestants and their stories. They are all just characters, from the finalists to the judges.

Like a soap you want to see the outcome of the story you want, and that means there are also rivals with counter-stories you want to see end. Heroes and villains, just like Big Brother.

It just gets more exaggerated each year to try and maintain the interest of the viewers, again like a soap.

Next year we'll probably have a plane crash into the studio for the multiple eliminations.
