I find it odd that contestants are criticised on here for being bland and singing covers, yet when any contestant shows a bit of spirit and a desire not to go down that route, they're also criticised for it! I guess they can't win!

This! I liked Janet because her voice was so recognisable, but I knew she'd suffer from the Diana Vickers syndrome where people would start slagging her off for being one-dimensional. Like somebody commented in another thread, when was the last time Take That produced a rap album?
I love Take That (well, this time round anyway, I was far too cool to be a fan the first time) but it would jar the hell out of me if they started singing rock or rap songs.
