My Orange iphone plan ends soon, and I've decided to upgrade with their offer of a free iPhone 4,( plus far more minutes.texts etc) which we'll be giving as a Christmas present to my stepson, as I am happy with my own Iphone 4.
Orange said they'll send a new sim card out which will need activating( or registering) so I can continue to use my number. Will I need to do this and then put the new sim in my current handset, leaving the new phone for him to put his sim into?

If I don't do this, will my current sim/number stop working?
Sorry if this seems like a really simple thing, but I'm never sure.

thanks in advance for any advice

You put the new SIM in your new phone and leave it there till it is activated. When it is activated, or maybe even before, the SIM in your old phone is deactivated so the old phone is effectively useless at this point. That is certainly how every phone upgrade I've had where I keep the number has worked.

Now whether you can then swap the new SIM back to your old phone is another matter. It may work OK. Only way to be sure is to try it. If the basic facilities of the two phones are broadly similar then it may well work fine.
