eta - not sure I'd have known who Hendrix was when 16 - and that was only a decade after his death, not forty odd years.

Except Hendrix played a right-handed guitar. The guy in the guitar shop knew this, but maybe the producer didn't, because the only left handed guitarist shown at the waxworks was Jimi Hendrix.

I did. It was a very short while after Surallen had finished explaining the Tussaud's was successful because it always kept completely up to date.

I was saying this from the start: Hendrix played a right handed guitar (normal) upside down - that is a basic well known hendrix fact.

So I was asking myself, would I buy a right handed guitar and tell them the facts, or buy what they had asked for? - I think I would have gone with buying what they asked for even if it was totally wrong for Hendrix.

They could of got a normal guitar anywhere though, a left handed one was more of a challenge.

Indeed and as that is what they asked for, then that is what I would have given them.

It does however have nothing to do with Jimmy Henrix.

Hendrix played a right-handed guitar upside down...but strung for a left handed guitarist. Elizabeth Cotton played a right-handed guitar upside down, left the strings where they were , and played everything inverted/upside down...like tying a bow-tie in a mirror whilst hanging updside down from the ceiling, crazy, try it some time..

Credit to the team - they went to tin pan alley, the right place to go.

Yes I went there last year and spent ages going from shop to shop. Very enjoyable. Just needed more money.

'Tin Pan Alley' - aka Denmark Street and the top of Charing Cross Road in the real world - is NOT the right place to go for a cheap southpaw electric guitar (which was the point of the task)

It's infamous for it's music shops+Lots of people go there=Prices are generally higher than you'll find at other major music retailers.

I have always wondered how the music stores in Denmark Street actually make any money, as virtually every shop down there sells the same things, I know they say competition is healthy, but that street is ridiculous.

It is great to walk down there though and go from store to store.

Didn't seem so bad to me at roughly £100. Especially for the ease of getting a left-handed guitar which seems reasonably specialist, don't think you can walk into Argos and get one of those.

The shops there are often vastly overpriced, particularly on "collectable" items.

But, £100 for a LH Tanglewood Strat is a decent price. Perhaps with the recession hitting, they've worked out that they have to have some reasonably priced stock to stay in business. £88 (I think it was) was a very good price. I'd guess the guitar was second hand for a shop to sell it that cheaply.

That would be how they make money, then - from all the people who think it is great to walk down and go from store to store.

I think the point was (and understood by Zara) that the task was about negotiation........no chance whatsoever in Argos.

Read up on the stores there. I'm shocked that some of them can stay in business.

As with so many things in life, it's not what you say it's how you say it. The look down her nose was unmistakable.

Must admit I was very surprised that Harry Haystackhead didn't suggest going to Chavalan or TK Chavv for the suit. Not

Zara's reaction was clearly that Argos was not where people like her could possibly shop (rather like Harry M's insistence at buying the suit in Jermyn Street).

It's true you can't haggle in Argos, but how many high street shops can you haggle in (unless you have a TV crew and Nick or Karren in tow)? The only negotiations most retailers will do is bundling in other accessories or price matching another store.

Second hand shops are the obvious places to go for haggling.

Oh I don't know - if you have the brass neck to ask for a discount there are quite a few places who will give you one! My sister in law is a terror for asking...... when we were buying her and my brother's wedding present in a well known store - we had a dozen crystal glasses all packed up and she asked will there be a discount - and we got 12% off just for having the cheek to ask!

I agree, cash is king these days......apart from places like Argos where you actually buy the damn thing before paying for it....if that makes sense
