I have two cats with claws. I have a scratching post for them which they do use. In the last couple months they have started scratching on some other places in my flat and I am not happy about it. If I catch them in the act, I yell and they stop but I am obviously not here all the time to catch them. They have ruined a magazine box holder, a section of wallpaper and are working on a dresser. I am wanting to get a Fatboy chair (very nice bean bag) soon which is about £160 but I fear it will get ruined really quickly. Any suggestions for what I can do to stop this recent bad behaviour? Great cats otherwise and find it strange they both have started doing this destructive scratching only recently!
Cat scratching - advice needed
I have floor scratchers dotted about everywhere. My cat doesn't like posts and prefers to go mad on the floor. I have two in the living room, one in the hallway, one on the landing and one in my bedroom. She still scratches in other places, but for attention seeking purposes only - such as the arm of my chair and my leg (but only if I am wearing jeans!). The other day I wouldn't get out of bed, so she pushed a tissue box off the dressing table onto the floor and pulled it to shreds. Cats work out quickly what gets your attention!

I have a similar problem with one of my cats, who ripped my last sofa to bits, so my new one I cover with a throw (pinned at the bottom otherwise it is an even better game to go up underneath the throw) and also carpets. However as it happens I have a fatboy beanbag, and neither of the cats have any interest in it, partly because it's a waterproof-type fabric (no grip for claws), and also because they are scared of the noise it makes when you sit on it.
Another thought: have you ever had their claws trimmed? Both mine start scratching more when their claws get too long, so I take them to the vets where she charges £6 to trim them. They do grow back surprisingly quickly, though.
