I see McLaren haven't stuck with the previous year's side pod design.

They can't due to the new exhaust regulations.

That car was a bad interpretation of the rule changes for '95. And it was pretty slow and looked difficult to drive.

Since Newey has used the step nosed approach, I wonder the teams that havent are a little bit worried. I understand that one part in isolation doesnt tell the whole story, and you have to look at the car as a whole, to see how the aero parts work together. If I was a team that hasnt used the stepped nose, I would be doing some frantic testing to make sure there was something I hadnt missed.”

To me, it's either McLaren have got their low nose thing spectacularly right or spectacularly wrong.

It was certainly slow with the bulk of Mansell in it, didn't they have to widen it for him? But it was the first Mercedes powered McLaren.

Will be interesting to see Lewis Hamilton's body language when being interviewed after his first outing, that should give us a clue.

Some news from a couple of days ago from dear old Ted Kravitz:

And Lewis Hamilton says his McLaren is missing high speed downforce, describes Red Bull and Lotus as 'quick' and 'impressive'.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions, but that doesn't sound good at all. But it's all relative because all the cars have lost a sizeable amount of grip due to the loss of the blown diffuser.

An interesting first few test sessions at Jerez.

Looking to be another good season.

Mercedes have announced their launch will take place at the start of the test in Barcelona.

Newey thinks that Mercedes have got some sort of new innovation that they are keeping secret, hence the late launch.

Good to hear Lewis say the McLaren is rubbish. Hope he is right but he is normally wrong about everything.

Even though that's not actually what he said, if you're referring to the vague 'according to sources' report I think you are. That's assuming he actually said anything...

But either way -

I always find it interesting how some fans actively wish competitors are out of the reckoning/off the pace/etc. As a true F1 fan, what I want more than anything is for the top 3 or 4 teams to be genuinely competing with eachother all season, allowing the drivers to fight eachother race-in, race-out.

I'm not a fan of Ferrari for example, but I'd much rather they were as strong as Red Bull/McLaren for the good of F1.

Petrov replaces Trulli at Caterham.

Quote:
“Caterham have announced that Vitaly Petrov will race for the team in 2012, replacing Jarno Trulli with immediate effect. Petrov attended a seat fitting at their UK factory in Hingham on Friday morning and will make his debut in the CT01 at next week’s second pre-season test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, alongside new team mate Heikki Kovalainen”

Hes too good a driver to be riving for caterham. Then again still racing is better than not racing.

I agree - the red bull domination was boring. I want to see a fight between 2, 3 or even 4 teams next season. But I want McClaren to win (but I don't think their car looks that great)

To be fair they are both past their prime now though one of the smaller teams could make good use of Ruben's experience. I'm sort of shocked that Hispania have gone for oldies Pedro de la Rosa (38) and Narain Karthikeyan (35). They have never set the grand prix world alight.

Probably the fact that ones Spanish and the other brings sponsorship money was the deciding factors, also Hispania expect to finish 11th again with Marussia not passing safety tests yet.

Only just got around to looking at this years cars.

Bloody hell! The way those noses look, I'm glad I'll be listening to the races on the radio.

Rumours are that it has an F duct on the front wing, one hopes it can give Nico his first win and add to MS's, this time in four weeks we'll have an idea where the teams stand after the first qualy. 28 days 11 hours and counting, RTL here we come!

If that Mercedes can allow Schumi and Rosberg challenging for race wins that would be great for the sport having another team in there going for the wins and the championship.

I'm really going to miss watching the full coverage of F1 this year on BBC. First time in well over 20 years I won't be able to see all of the races live. Saddens me that we won't be getting a live race until April. Can't afford to subscribe to sky (and wouldn't line that lowlifes pockets if I could afford it anyway) so am thoroughly fed up that I'm going to miss some of the live races. Ahh, flump it! I do hope the season is a little more varied this year, than of late.

You still can, check out the satellite forums plenty of ideas to set up a system to watch on Germany's RTL, and cheap too, don't be put off by all the jargon!

in a few years time we will have second rate drivers getting all the seats because they have sponsership. None of those that have been sponsored have set the world alight

Nah.

The top teams will always be willing to pay for the top talent.

The big problem is, IMO, the current fashion for small teams (and the various driver managers) to treat F1 as a "testing ground" for new talent.
They seem to be happy to take on any yahoo with a big enough bundle of cash, take some of it off them and give them a seat in an F1 car for a year.

Not really sure how it'll be possible to stop this but it certainly seems as though, in future, some of the smaller teams will only exist to take cash and give new drivers a chance to dip their toe in F1 before moving on to a more competitive team or give up.
